Not a lot of people know this but there are at least 120 Catholic priests in the U.S. who are married and many have kids. Meanwhile, the Pope is contemplating ordaining more married priests.
But for now, practitioners of this faith are mostly single to serve the Lord without the burden of rugrats.
And so, this bit of family advice and Sunday contemplation doesn't come from experience but with some scriptural reference . . .

And while we respect this high ranking cleric who has done reasonably well in turning the local diocese around after scandal took down his predecessor . . .

For those of who haven't "slipped one past the goalie" this gentle reminder can be helpful in avoiding more than a few stupid arguments.

ReplyDeletePriests are human and should not be denied the comfort of a loving relationship. Substituting human companionship with a life of sacrifice, loneliness and denial goes against our basic instincts. Today's priests need all the support they can get as they do a very difficult job.

A servant can only have one master. When you're married and a parent, you're number one responsibility is to your family. When you're a priest, you're responsibility is to the Church, first and foremost.
ReplyDeleteThis is why when Jesus called on the first disciples, he told them to leave their families behind and follow him.
It isn't about marriage. it is about controlling sex which has been a huge factor in the head games religions have played for thousands of years. Now that so many folks are fucking their kids, their brothers, their sisters,their mommies and daddies, their cats, their neighbors, little boys, their teachers and probably their priest the church is loosing its grip. So why not try to win a few back and making them good catholics by telling them it is OK to do what they will do anyway?

The married, with children, priests have largely come from Epicopalian Priests who left the Epicopal Church over pro-homosexual issues.
