TKC BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS!!! NORTHEAST KANSAS CITY SCENIC CLIFF DRIVE 'GOOSENECK GREEN' ENDANGERED BY HORRIBLY PLANNED PARKING LOT!!!

This morning we hope our blog community has a chance to enjoy the warmer weather and get outside before it gets too hot and/or dangerous . . . And because it's a perfect time to enjoy local parks, this important bit of community journalism is at the top of our agenda.

To wit . . .

AWESOME TKC TIPSTERS SHARE THE DEETS OF A HORRIFIC PLAN TO RUIN ONE OF THE MOST SCENIC SPOTS IN ALL OF KANSAS CITY!!!

As usual, this scheme is reportedly cooked up by consultants in a dark room somewhere and the debut has locals clearly frustrated with JE Dunn who was picked to work on KC Museum renovation late last year.

Here's the word and a brilliant explanation of how KC is working to make a beloved local park just a bit less beautiful thanks to meticulous planning that FAILS to see the big picture:

KICK-ASS TKC TIPSTER: "Let me showcase what boondoggle our bureaucrats are dreaming up now to benefit JE Dunn near The Kansas City Museum . . . Planners getting high consultancy fees couldn't figure this out in the months it took them to create this cockamamie idea."

The Gooseneck Green in Kessler Park/Cliff Drive is one of the most scenic, bucolic and historical areas in Kansas City. Couples picnic here. People play with their dogs. Others come here at sunset to view a stunning panorama of downtown. At night, deer gather. Even though I welcome the plans to renovate the Kansas City Museum, I was recently made aware of their expansion plans.

Frankly, the plan is to ruin Gooseneck Green. The top down view of the parking lot doesn't do it justice. We're talking about grading. We're talking about 14-foot retaining walls. We're talking about extensive tree removal. Euphemistically, the parking structure is referred to as "temporary". However, it'll cost at least $650,000 and it will likely be there for a decade or more.

I cannot support this despoliation of public park land. Ironically, the goal is to create a destination that people want to visit, but at the price of destroying the very scenery that led people to create the beauty of the museum in the first place! Does it make sense to build a parking lot over a landscape jewel so that people in the future can drive to an exhibit of photographs to see what the area used to look like?

Heck, on today's walk, I realized that there are 1,000 parking spots over at Kessler Reservoir! The Museum would never have to worry about parking again. Personally, I don't mind walking 10-15 minutes. However, a shuttle bus can cover this in 4 minutes (8 minute complete roundtrip) . . . We could use $300,000 of that parking lot money and revamp that whole neighborhood by improving the connecting walkways.

I've attached pictures of what it looks like now and what the vision is. Horrible! I'm sure it's no accident that they only did a top down view.

  1. KC loves destroying our history.

Westport is being bulldozed over. We're quickly erasing most of the old buildings on the Plaza and now northeast is the new demolition site. This kind of thinking lessens the value our our city and turns us into just another strip mall. We need to work to preserve our historic parks and buildings because they are under attack.

  2. A council that valued neighborhoods over developers would be a good start. But we're too busy thinking about the next, big toy to come along.

    1. Regardless what it's called, anytime a green space is being turned into a parking lot explanations are warranted.

  10. Anonymous, if that is your real name, why do you say that these are "lies"? This information came from the KC Museum Director's presentation... Do you work for JE Dunn?

  11. Give me a Break... the people in Kansas City don't appreciate anything anyone does to help preserve the history anyway take a look at how Hyde Park treats it's residents who help out."no stays there long" No one goes to Northeast, it's a waste land with what was once beautiful mansions. It's gone, get over it!

  14. Why does Kansas city keep destroying its history? Makes NO sense and what's sad is that the city council keeps going along with it.

Where is Jolie, this is her district?

  16. Old Northeast is still home to some fabulous people, trying desperately to save the area from City Hall neglect and abuse. For whatever reason, they are forever waiting for something to be done about trash, drugs, crime in general, and idiot landlords. City Hall seems to take pleasure in ignoring this part of KC.

  18. Too bad the city sold the huge empty lot across from the museum a few years ago. There was no bid for the land, it was bought for $17 grand because the owner's had a connection with the former museum director. Just shows you how things work in Kansas City.

  19. Too bad the former director of the museum sold the large lot across the street. There was no bidding process, just an inside deal, 17 grand. That is how bigness gets done in Kc. Check it out idiots.
