KANSAS CITY WEEKLY POWER RANKINGS!!!

A wild week amid the Kansas City discourse offers a preview of a long Summer that should be filled with even more political fighting and sketchy rhetorical tactics amid the echo of deadly gunfire in the background.

To wit . . .

Here's a quick peek at the power players who offered the most influence over our local discourse . . .

Council Lady Teresa Loar Stands Up For Voters During KCMO New Airport Debate

Veteran Kansas City political denizen Teresa Loar is bravely providing a voice for voters in a rush to give away BILLIONS worth of revenue to corporate special interests. Her arguments merely wants the decision to belong to VOTERS rather than rigged bidding and empty social media rhetoric of the mayor and his minions.

Mike Burke Bypasses Kansas City Voters

Fact: Mike Burke and his partners have secured $35 MILLION in financing so far from City Hall without any approval from Kansas City voters. The deal was pushed through by the previous city council in a rush vote and now most of the current council has allowed the proposed Downtown Convention Hotel to move forward despite a petition that demanded input from the electorate. This is the quintessential Kansas City power move that is so bold and such a slap in the face to voters that no "journalist" in Kansas City would dare speak or write against it.

Behind The Scenes: Councilman Lee Barnes Helps Craft New Airport RFP

His style is low key, he's exceptionally smart and thoughtful and so his work often goes unmentioned while so many other politicos mug for the cameras and interviews. However, this week Councilman Barnes was instrumental in helping to draft a new request for proposal for an upcoming airport vote.

SecState Kris Kobach Sets His Sights On Dead End Kansas Governor's Office Gig

He announced his bid to replace Gov. Brownback that angered "progressives" across the nation until they struggled to come up with the name of one Kansas Democratic Party denizen with a bigger profile and name recognition.

Reporting The Good Life: Johnson County Privilege Guides Local Media

Most local media players live in the JoCo Golden Ghetto and so they think their precious neighborhoods are a representation of real life . . . For better and mostly worse for all of Kansas City outside of this guided bubble.

And so . . .

As always, this list has been compiled according to scientific TKC polling and market research data and it's a weekly comprehensive guide to local powerful people.

  1. The fix is in at the airport. Too bad. It will eventually bankrupt KC by giving away all of that revenue.

  6. Hope Lee Barnes works with outside counsel.

Hint: Engage an outside, independent financial expert to help draft the RFP and consult during the selection process.

  7. What cracks me up is Johnson County is now divided into North JoCo where there elite used to live, and South JoCo where the elite have moved to escape the poor, elderly, and (gasp) people of color moving into North. The SMSD is having to redraw the attendance boundaries because some neighborhoods don't have enough kids to keep the formerly awesome schools open. Talk about Paradise Lost.
