KANSAS CITY FEAR & THREATS AMID NEW SINGLE-TERMINAL AIRPORT TALK!!!

The topic of a new single-terminal airport has once again inspired a great deal of loose talk among the leaders of Kansas City's political scene . . . Most of the chatter hopes to scare voters into a quick decision that's worth more than a BILLION bucks.

We'll have more on this later but for now there are just a couple of things worth pointing out . . .

Last night Council Dude Dan Fowler argued that indecision from Kansas City could cost taxpayers despite the fact that most airport experts agree that funding for either renovation or a new terminal will come mostly from airport review derived from airlines.

Moreover . . .

Nobody is mentioning the airport gate downgrade that irks Council and voter opposition of the plan. NOT SO FUN FACT: Single-Terminal Airport Plans DOWNGRADE THE NUMBER OF GATES currently in use and the war against airline competition that will cost travelers is at the heart of this local discussion to make a quick buck. Last night Council Lady Teresa Loar called out airport dude Patrick Klein on this topic in no uncertain terms and revealed that current honcho can't count the gates at his facility . . .

Again, there's a lot more to this but for now the fear and tough talk that accompanies most airport rhetoric is a sign that some local leaders want a quick ballot effort rather than a real discussion about the best move for Kansas City's future.

Read more as the Council meets with a legal team right now and we do it again tonight . . .

Tonight: "Kansas City Councilmembers Teresa Loar and Dan Fowler will be hosting a Town Hall meeting Tuesday, June 6th , 6 pm at the Northland Cathedral, 101 NW 99th. This event will give residents the opportunity to freely voice their opinions on the Kansas City International Airport and its future. Everyone is encouraged to attend- this is a public forum."

KCUR: People Still Have Questions And Concerns About New KCI Plan, Even After Bids Open Up

Comments

  1. There is no reason to push this to a November election. It needs to slow down.

Three weeks is not enough time to consider all of the bids that might come in.

The rush to do this is the main concern, you need to write about that TKC.

    @1:07 is a cheapskate!

The airlines are paying for it. Make them pay and stop leaving the bill to KC taxpayers.

We need a new airport. KC must stop living in the past!

  3. frequent flyers like KCI's convenience. they are fine with basically ok food and drink. they don't go to the airport to dine or shop.

people who don't fly much may want an airport to be an entertainment venue with fast-food courts and t-shirt and toy shops.

frequent flyers would have a hard time citing one truly charming airport venue.

people who don't fly much may be impressed by big buildings and long escalators and shuttle trains.

KCI is a great airport for travelers! with some tweaks, not expensive, it could be even better.

    Save KCI!

  4. 1:14 there is no free lunch. frequent flyers know that.

  5. The notion that we have to start as soon as possible to get a new airport cheaper reveals the flim-flam nature of the proposal.

  6. TWA told KC that if they didn't move the airport from downtown to MCI, they were gonna leave. KC moved it and they moved anyway. Any promises that the airlines make are pretty hollow, and we should understand that. Whatever happens are up to us and on our dime, no matter what they say.

  7. the airlines want a new airport to shift the convenience factor to them. they want people to line up and wait for when the airlines' reduced staffing is ready. they want people to walk miles to where they want to drop off baggage. they want people to be dropped off or picked up far way and arrive to wait in line hours ahead of time.

that's why the airlines want a new airport. to shift convenience to themselves and away from travelers.

further, they want fewer gates to keep out competition. this is a sleeper aspect of the cronies' deal.

  8. Save KCI!

    Vote no in November!

  12. Its amazing when people who know nothing on the topic are allowed to chime in, it creates confusion for everyone. Read the article KC Biz Journal did back on March 17th or 18th before any of this came out where it had independent grading of our beloved airport...it scored a D+ on convenience and is horrible for passenger enplanement per employee efficiency. Separate baggage claim and security systems creates additional cost which gets passed to the airlines and ultimately the passengers. Airplanes have gotten bigger and the terminal needs bandaids to make things work as is, from a very frequent traveler what we have is held together with duct tape and bailing wire...and whether its BMCD, AECOM, HNTB or whoever this city badly needs a new airport.

Section on Gate count...SWA currently uses 8 gates at KCI...they do 50% of the traffic out of this city. DO THE MATH, only probably gates would really be needed. Currently 30+ gates are being used due to the airport inefficiency. Read the KC Biz article and it shows which carrier uses how many gates. If you are going to make claims do some research before providing false information.

For those people who say "the taxpayers will eat the cost just wait", you are fools...its called a contract, and the contract spells out who is responsible for paying the bill.

    1. What are you, a summer intern at Burns$McDouche? So you read a KC Buz Journal article, and now you are an expert, and nobody should be allowed to come in, as you put it. Also, it's pretty naive of you to think the terms of a contract mean anything. You're a dipshit.

  14. the business journal article with ludicrous wait times was discredited.

it was such an obvious fake news plant.

KCI voters, being from Missouri, will vote based on what they see with their own eyes.

they're likely to vote no. especually now.

  15. I work in the aviation industry and understand contract language. If I was BMCD I wouldn't waste my time trying to explain it to you because it would be a waste of my energy. I know how badly our city needs a new airport, and what opportunities that it will bring. I presented factual information and how the business works, you hurl name calling insults as if we are children on a playground.

I have no problem with people voicing opinions, its when they are completely false or have no basis that it bothers me and saying taxpayers would be on the hook for the bill is completely incorrect.

  18. What even the proponents of building a new terminal should be asking themselves is, if the project could be presented thoughtfully, honestly, and on its merits, why in the world has the sales job from city hall been such a disingenuous and Keystone Cops affair?
It's just been one assertion and claim after another and when particularly ridiculous elements of the MOU have been forced into the public light of day, they are immediately taken off the table.
The credibility of Sly and his gang of Merry Pranksters is already bad enough, but this effort has taken it to new lows.
If this is how the build up to a project is handled, does anyone actually think that this gang of clowns can oversee it and assure the public it's getting its money's worth?
    World class.

  20. The Mexican restaurant at KCI Terminal B is decent. In fact, it's as good as any airport restaurant anywhere.

The Italian restaurant at Midway is good, too.

That diner restaurant at Baltimore is OK.

The bar by Southwest at Boston has OK sandwiches.

Which other airport restaurants are good or fair?

In general, the food courts are fast-food and not even good at executing the standardized fare.

But this frequent flyer doesn't really care about mediocre food choices at airports.

  22. flyers pay the airlines and thus pay for airports.

but flyers is us, not somebody else.

taxpayers are always on the hook, however. for example, if some airlines go broke and abandon gates, taxpayers would inevitably be called on to keep the airport open.

  26. NEWAIRPORTKCI @ 1:14 P.M. says "the airlines are paying for it" Really? Where have you seen that printed on a CONTRACT? Do we even have a signed contract with all the airlines that fly in and out of KCI? Why isn't it published so the taxpayers can be assured that their promises are valid? Because we DON'T have a contract with any airline. Someone is pushing this notion down the throats of the voters -- the ones who will really be paying. If anyone can point us to the City's contract where those words are located, please let the voters know.

  27. Sensible renovations of the existing multi-terminal configuration is the best stewardship of resources.

Some of that other almost $BIL may do well going to solar and wind, if the water audits and those delayed repairs are well underway...
