KC Convention Hotel: Lack of Transparency Undermines Confidence

For years, a development group led by former Kansas City politico Mike Burke has been trying to close a convention hotel deal downtown. It's tough to know exactly what is going on, but recent news stories do not inspire confidence.

  3. How can it be Burke's folly when he doesn't have any money in it himself and will be doing just fine, in fact most likely already is, with fees and other revenues the projects spins off?
    Burke's a guy who knows a lot about how developers can access the vast laundry list of government programs, tax breaks, subsidies, and outright cash that are available.
    And he knows what easy marks reside in the council chambers at 12th and Oak.
    The folly ends up with the folks actually providing most of the money for this fiasco.
    And in KCMO, as usual, that would be YOU.
