APPROVED WITHOUT VOTER CONSENT: KANSAS CITY BUYING $11.9 MILLION MORE JUNKY SPANISH TOY TRAIN STREETCARS!!!

Lots on online chest thumping about this one despite the ongoing destruction of Kansas City Democracy . . .

Check the presser that hits all of the typical talking points . . . Moreover, but notice that the KANSAS CITY TOY TRAIN STREETCAR MANUFACTURED IN SPAIN is omitted. Whilst the shoddy Euro-trash workmanship is clear in the constant breakdowns and delays of the streetcar compared to much more dependable American manufacturing . . . This tidbit is hidden from locals in much the same way that the deal is financed with a higher "anticipated" sales tax growth rate that has more to do with overwhelming taxpayer subsidy along the line.

KC Streetcar Authority to Purchase More Streetcar Vehicles

Today, the KC Streetcar Authority received approval from City Council to purchase two additional streetcar vehicles for the existing downtown route. Earlier Thursday, the City’s Transportation and Infrastructure Committee unanimously approved the purchase and acquisition plan for the additional streetcar vehicles.

The total purchase plan is $11.9 million, with streetcar costs at approximately $4.9 million apiece, in addition to costs for spare parts and inspection support. The purchase will use existing downtown Transportation Development District, or TDD, funds, resulting from higher than anticipated sales tax growth within the district and stabilized operations expenses. The KC Streetcar Authority Board and the TDD Board of Directors unanimously approved the acquisition and purchasing plan in prior actions. The City Council action is required in order to complete the required local approvals. The estimated time frame to build two streetcars is twenty-four months.

"Our streetcar system is the envy of cities around the country with many other systems visiting Kansas City to learn best practices. Future growth in downtown housing and development of new activity centers are anticipated to significantly grow ridership demand in coming years. This investment will allow us to meet the current demand as well as improve service for our riders,” said Third District Councilman Jermaine Reed, Chairman of Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

Currently, the KC Streetcar system is comprised of four streetcar vehicles, with a three-streetcar operation running seven days a week. Since opening day, nearly 2,400,000 streetcar rides have been completed with daily average ridership at 5,700. This exceeds initial ridership forecasts of 2,700.

“It is a good problem to have, our streetcars are running at or near capacity on a regular basis and we need additional capacity to ensure reliable operations and improved service in the years to come,” said Tom Gerend, executive director of the KC Streetcar Authority.

The two additional KC Streetcars will be manufactured by CAF and produced at CAF's production plant in Elmira, NY.

  1. The streetcar was not a city-wide vote. Only voted on by those in the TDD. Why does the public have to vote on every fucking thing in this City?

Should we also vote every time the police buy a new car?

  2. This is true. Look at your sales receipt after shopping. It eats away and eats away at your budget. If on fixed income, you are taxed out. Can't afford to live in the city. Even more taxes to come. Visitors won't feel it. Citizens will suffer. Double for the Riverfront. Triple for the Plaza. Xennials can afford it. Others. Just move along.

  6. This crazy ass town is bleeding money faster than any transfusions of cash will ever fix.

New blood is needed bad in KC who will stand up and stop this insane throwing of money at projects that don't serve the city as a whole but instead service only a select few.

  7. They finally showed their cards...they had a surplus. At least they spent it on the line.

  8. The reason why Kansas City's ridership numbers on the Streetcar exceed other cities is that we have more white racists who won't ride a bus in Kansas City than other cities. And there is no way we have 5,700 riders a day on a two-mile loop. No way.

  9. They lie. Barely 1000 ride a day. It moves to slow. I can walk faster. Screw that stupid train.

  10. Uh, sure 6:04, those rolling gun battles right next to the rails, the boons ramming each other through streetcar windshields, some rude and lewd ebonics hollered down the aisles, and big b.o. to gag a moose IS SO MUCH BIG CITY EXCITEMENT...IT'D BE A SHAME TO MISS OUT!!!

  12. "Our streetcar program is the envy of cities around the country and officials are coming to KCMO to learn best practices".
Such a ridiculous statement could best be read after inhaling from a helium balloon.
In KCMO there hasn't been a "best practice" in sight for decades.
Reed must have these people confused with the 24 million tourists from France flocking here to see the streetcar or visit one of the hipster coffee shops before it closes its doors.
Can someone please introduce some adult supervision and reality to the clueless gang at 12th and Oak?

  13. And don't forget we get 3 times more tourists than Hawaii!!!

  22. The City Counsel is a group which as a whole has no understanding of economics and the long term impact of their decisions.
They are all about a social engineering experiment. Maybe we should run the street car to 18th and Vine.
No additional police on the streets??? How about investing more $$$ in street cars. Let tax the KC residents some more....

    ReplyDelete
  23. The City Counsel should be pushing a giant right sizing of the city organization. The money saved with this right sizing should fund additional police on the streets along with additional jail and court system. It is time to get the criminals off the KC streets.
