Small not-so-fun fact ignored in local discussions . . . The new airport has been pushed forward by (emergency) ordinances with an "accelerated" effective date. This mode of local legislation not only eliminates voter petition from the process but also drops so many options for City Council oversight.
The rushed "accelerated" ordinance and lack of committee input is one of many signs that the process is still rigged.

City manager: Bidding won't take KCI terminal project off fast track - Kansas City Business Journal
Under a competitive bidding process launched Tuesday, a memorandum of understanding related to the winning single-terminal proposal is expected to be approved by the City Council by about July 15. That's only a month behind the schedule Burns & McDonnell's no-bid plan was on.
To make Sly look good before his term expires and make sure the city stays one step ahead of bankruptcy court.
ReplyDeleteKeep the bankster bailout rolling? 2008 wasn't that long ago.
ReplyDeleteThey're baiting everyone, and everyone is falling for it. They've managed to change the basis of conversation without notice. Before, the fight was about "do we want a new airport?", now the fight is about "who gets to build the new airport?". The question of "if" has been assummed to have been answered, and they've conned everyone to instead fight about the "how". Heck, they're so brazen at this point that Schulte is willing to let himself be quoted as saying that the "bidding process won't take the airport project off the fast track".
ReplyDeleteTake a step back, and this ploy is very easy to see through. The question then becomes, why hasn't anyone in the media reported such? Sadly, that question is just as easy to answer. When the survival of the only "paper of record" we have is dependent on tax breaks and low property valuations to survive, and these are granted by the same people who they are supposed to be holding accountable, principles will always give way. Our TV outlets are not much different, they depend on access to the City Hall folks to produce their fluff pieces, and City Hall has been allowed to condition this access on the outlets blind acceptance of the City's line.
It's all very sad... a textbook example of a City government with no responsibility to, or care for, the citizenry and a press that has no qualms about neglecting their journalistic responsibility. THIS is an example of how democracy dies.
^^^ Nailed it
ReplyDeleteWell done 3:08

ReplyDelete@3:08, that is so well written I wonder if you're a muni lawyer? If so, who are you billing for anonymous blog commenting time? haha (I kid of course, though I did get a bill from a lawyer for $60 a full two years after I spent 15 min. on the phone with him). Anyway, you should run for council.

ReplyDeleteHaven't seen an op-ed by a municipal finance investment banker or bond lawyer in the local newspaper about the perils of the crony deal's unique financing.
ReplyDeleteGuessing these folks are all afraid of speaking up, lest they lose future business.
Crony democracy.
