TKC GUIDE TO CELEBRATING DRUNKEN KANSAS CITY FIRST FRIDAY CINCO DE MAYO AMID THE REIGN OF PREZ TRUMP!!!
This could be the last great Cinco De Mayo in Kansas City history before Prez Trump builds the wall.
Accordingly . . .
CHECK THIS QUICKIE TKC GUIDE TO CELEBRATING KANSAS CITY CINCO DE MAYO WITH JUST A BIT OF DIGNITY!!!
No, nobody cares about the Battle Of Puebla or the fact that Cinco De Mayo is actually a tradition that was born out of the Chicano student movement and adopted as an American celebration of cultural heritage . . . Now, just like St. Paddy's Day . . . It's just another beer & fast food company gorge-fest.
On the bright side . . . This still provides an opportunity to celebrate Kansas City Latino entrepreneurial culture in a convenient location before hipster gentrification pushes it all to more dangerous parts of Northeast and KCK.
For better or worse, there's still a few authentic Mexican restaurants where Latinos actually work on The Westside and tonight hipsters will pack the Boulevard in a First Friday culture mash up that hasn't been seen since college white girls first started listening to Ozomatli during the Bush Years.
And that is the tonight's guide . . . The Westside is gonna be exceptionally crowded, traffic and DUI enforcement is in full effect, no the streetcar doesn't go this way and there are a lot of denizens of the surrounding neighborhoods who DO understand things like real estate speculation and market bubbles . . . Still, skipping all bustle of the urban core and hanging out at a typically lame place like Port Fonda or some suburban strip mall place means that you've lost your sense of adventure . . .
But I digress . . .
As usual, there's always the temptation to play the cultural purist or fall into a victim mentality about "appropriation" or whatever.
Fact is, Mexican culture in general and Chicano culture in particular is adept and coping with cognitive dissonance in lieu of a good time.
Also, a few gringos playing the ugly American amid today's celebration is a lot easier to handle given today's increased business, the fact that all the Mexicans are already on this side of the border, and THE WALL is starting to look more like a rickety fence.

ReplyDeleteI like a good holiday as much as the next guy, but why should I celebrate a Mexican victory over the French? Maybe if Mexico celebrates the Yorktown victory by Washington I would return the favor
ReplyDeleteMay 5, get drunk celebrating a victory over France. If we did that when Germans had a victory over France we'd never be sober.
