TKC BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS!!! PETITIONERS RAGE AGAINST EMERGENCY ORDINANCE APPROVAL FOR DOWNTOWN KANSAS CITY CONVENTION HOTEL!!!

Here's a Kansas City legislative gambit exposed BEFORE it happens . . .

CHECK PUSH BACK AGAINST BEHIND THE SCENES WORD OF AN EMERGENCY ORDINANCE TO RAM THROUGH THE CONVENTION HOTEL WITHOUT ANY CHECKS OR BALANCES FROM VOTERS!!!

Here's the sitch explained and a plea to City Council . . .

Mike Burke's End Run

Dear Councilperson,

If you haven’t been you will soon be approached by the Downtown Hotel Developers and / or their mouthpiece about cancelling Downtown Hotel ordinance #170255 on which we have filed a “Notice of Intent to circulate a referendum petition” so the voters might have a chance to vote on this project. The developers are asking for $167,000,000 in taxpayer cash, land and freebies. We deserve a voice, it’s our money.

Their intent is to cancel ordinance #170255 and replace with the same ordinance, different number WITH AN ACCELERATED OR EMERGENCY CLAUSE ATTACHED TO IT, SO WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CHALLENGE IT.

While they complain about the petition process which is perfectly legal, they are not above using underhanded tactics to get around the City Charter. We believe they were told early on this ordinance does not warrant an accelerated or emergency clause. However, they will now pressure you, the City Council and the City Attorney to do it their way and ignore the taxpayers.

We hope you will stand up for the people of KCMO who elected you to work in their best interests and not cave into developers who have not provided you with enough information to push this project forward. Now is the time for you to make the people’s voice known. You have leverage to demand answers. DO IT!

If you listen to the Kansas City Star editorial board from Johnson County, you will think our purpose is wrong. If you read the comments on the blogs and from our partners, you will see how right our position really is. Don’t be fooled, STAND UP!

  1. Seems like a very capitalist move after all of the love on international workers day.

  2. Again and again, voters should know that if this was such a great idea than businesses would be lining up to invest in the project and there wouldn't be to a need to pass this kind of ordinance under the cloak of secrecy.

  3. A Sly move if I've ever seen one.

  4. yeah, the protesting with the people is for appearances.

it's really about advancing the elites' agenda and gleaning some personal benefits in the process.

build the hotel, build a new airport, build more streetcar lines......what'll they think of next?

  5. The least Burke could do would be to guarantee that EVERY job in his new taxpayer-subsidized hotel would pay at least $15/hour.
Time to give THAT speech, Sly!

  6. No way the hotel will pay illegal immigrant maids $15 per hour.

  7. Another Hotel in Downtown Kansas City is A Huge Risk Once it is operational there may be several hotels down town file for bankruptcy there are only so many visitors will want to stay down town and the visitors that likes to stay probably would prefer the CROWN CENTER HOTELS.

  10. KC Star Editorial Board = non-resident mouthpiece for screwing KCMO working-class taxpayers.

Burke Hotel Developers = corporate welfare queens, shrouded in secrecy, trying to hoodwink everyone involved into having the KCMO taxpayer build a hotel and give it to them for pennies on the dollar.

KCMO Council = led by an anti-taxpayer/pro-development clique of corrupt lawyers (James-Justus-Taylor-Lucas, etc.)

CFRG = grassroots civic organization following the letter of the law to have their concerns expressed.

This end run may be legal, but to me, it is immoral. This could be the turning point--when the public catches on. Will the worm turn on them, in two years?

It's like in Congress, the upcoming midterm elections--a chance to set things right.

This council has a serious case of Noblesse Oblige. A sense that "they know better". And ironically, Burke and the planners have putzed around with this thing for so long that they could never meet their own self-imposed design and construction deadlines--which has allowed enough scrutiny and criticism to arise.

Buyer's (or pre-buyer's) remorse has set in. The public has had its pockets picked so many times that they are waking up and wondering, GEE--I don't hang out in the Power and Light district, afraid of the hoodrats. I'm not some millenial who needs an entertainment "district". This ain't downtown Denver, and will never be LoDo. I don't need to go downtown ever. Rode the Toy Train once. Zzzzzz. So why do I need to spend $167 MILLION more, to buy some rich developers a hotel? Answer: I don't! Where's that petition? Let me sign. This should require a vote of the people.

Only now, the corrupt council is gonna shut off that opportunity? With a substitute ordinance, and call it "an emergency"? A five year old "emergency"???

Throw the bums out. And just in case Sly James is contemplating some other "public service", eg running for Congress--hell no to that as well. Time to run The Music Man and his 76 trombones and his 12 member clown council out of town. Turn off the tap. We're done here.

  13. So let's see:
The development gang gets $167 million in public land and cash.
And the "activists" from the "movement" get a lousy speech delivered poorly by Sly because it was written by somebody else.
    Time to pick the WINNER!
    And the sold-out loser.
    Frosty!

  15. What happened to the six companies that provide catering to Bartle Hall that would lose their business to Mike Burke's catering monopoly? Has that changed or is it just being ignored by the Killa City Scar?
