5,500 trips per day for one toy train isn't possible.
ReplyDeleteAssuming a twelve hour day, that's 458 riders per hour.
Since it's free to ride, why lie about the ridership numbers?
Just think that if City Hall had listen to the people who wanted Streetcars this would of been done years ago . No City Hall kept saying Light Rail which cost to much Now 14 years later we have Streetcars , if only they had listen we could of had the line from downtown to 95th street .
ReplyDeleteBy the way why don't they have the line turn on 39th st and go to Westport with stops on Broadway to go to St Lukes and the Plaza for shopping and on to UMKC ? Why stay on Main ?
The City has zero credibility when they repeat the lies about streetcar ridership. Those trolleys are empty all week long until the tourist show up on the weekend. Paid dividends - how much has the new construction in the streetcar district paid to real estate taxes? This tourist attraction is costing taxpayers $12 million per year.

DeleteTrolley folks claim they brought a lot of apartments and hotels to the area. But these new structures require City services and they are all tax abated, could someone explain the dividends?
ReplyDeleteIt is way past time for the KC Star to do some investigated reporting about those streetcar ridership numbers. Would not be too hard, just stand on Main Street and watch the empty trolleys go by all day.
ReplyDeleteFrom the City of lies - 5,500 trolley riders a day and 24 million tourists a year!!! If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.
ReplyDeleteIn five years, when the actual drain on the general fund of the streetcar has become apparent, the cost of continuing to subsidize the P&L Distric, plus the new debt service for the bond issue, Kemper Arena, Mike's hotel, the UMKC downtown arts campus,and who knows what else, the loss of revenue from all the TIFs and subsidies, is added to the inability of the "developments" to financially perform, forcing them to return to city hall for more cash, serious residents of KCMO will look back and wonder how in the world they let this all happen.
ReplyDeleteBy that time the young people who are today's millenials will have matured and changed their priorities to being concerned about earning an actual living, educating their kids in good schools, and living in safe neighborhoods, none of which can be found in KCMO, and certainly not downtown.
And the new electeds at 12th and Oak will be presented with a whole new menu if bright shiny things to buy or risk "being left behind".
Sly's Christmas bash will be over.
It will be January and the credit cards folks are going to want their money.

ReplyDeleteFor the streetcar to have 5,500 riders a day, it would mean that most of the people who work downtown live in those $1400/month downtown apartments. Have you been to City Hall? Or the Federal Building or downtown banks? Those employees couldn't afford to live in Waldo much less downtown.
