Kansas City Stays Losing Tech Workers

Quick insight into hiring excuses from local companies who outsource most of their programming work overseas. Still, an interesting premise that might lead to more local educational opportunities. Take a peek:

Report: KC is a tech hub but labor shortage is hampering growth

But for Kansas City to realize its full potential, tech leaders, policymakers and the community need to do more to cultivate homegrown talent, KC Tech Council president Ryan Weber said. "Attracting talent from another city is a very small game - and often a losing game," Weber said.

  3. The notion that KC is a tech hub is ridiculous on it face.
And if all the super-hype and rah rah from the Chamber claiming that KCMO is the arts capital of the world and leading the way in urban living and modern transit, why aren't all these millenial techies dying to come here?
If PR and hype were gold, the city might even have enough money to fix the streets and hire more cops.

  6. I'm a high-tech worker who has spent most of my career out of town, and have been out of work for quite some time. Calling KC a "tech-hub" is a joke. For one, the local employers want a major player with all kinds of experience but they arn't willing to pay even close to what those kinds of people are supposed to make. If you are asked what you want to get paid, if you go anywhere over what someone a few years out of college makes, then they just don't call back. Another new trick is to pay temp workers per hour what they might make for salary with benefits and tell us "they're PROTECTING US by making us used to making less money so if they offer us a salary job, we're already used to making not enough money". ONLY IN KC WOULD THEY TRY SOMETHING THIS STUPID!

When KC tech employers wake up to reality, they might actually find those qualified tech workers they're looking for. They couldn't compete nationally to save their businesses.

  8. KC is as much of a tech hub as it is the Paris of the bible belt attracting 25 million tourists a year. Entirely bullshit, in other words. You gotta be more than a decrepit Rust Belt city with a new train that doesn't go anywhere.
