KANSAS CITY KANGAROO DRAMA: FIGHT TO SAVE UMKC THEATER FROM BUDGET CUTS!!!

Harsh times for local dramatists and the latest cry for help . . .

In response to pending budget cuts which threaten the very existence of UMKC Theatre, a public, community-wide Town Hall meeting has been scheduled for Sunday, June 4 at 6p at Spencer Theatre on the UMKC campus. Theatre faculty, students, alumni and supporters will be speaking to show support for UMKC Theatre and demonstrate to the UMKC administration the extensive community support for this program. Currently, severe budget cuts will mean the loss of four faculty positions for the coming school year, seriously jeopardizing its nationally prominent graduate MFA Theatre program. #saveumkctheatre

  4. Isn't this the same pack of hucksters that just a few weeks ago wanted a huge expansion of UMKC up north? Sounds like the school needs some managers that grasp how to survive in a competitive world. Don't they teach that shit at the school?

  5. A degree in Theater from UMKC is worth nothing in the real world. You may be qualified to teach drama at a high school, and you may be able to score a small role in one of the local theater groups. You may also need a real 9-5 paying job to support your "hobby". You may also have to move to Chicago or New York or maybe Los Angeles and hope to be discovered. A lot of "ifs" and "maybes" are at play. Good luck.

  6. I disagree with 10:08.

Kansas City is a great theatre town. And many local actors survive here. the collaborations with UMKC Theatre Dept and Unicorn Theatre are producing some EXCELLENT plays, starring not just the students, but faculty including two of KC's most powerful actors, on faculty, Ted Swetz and Carla Noack.

One of the things UMKC actually does better than other universities happens to be theatre. Putting this dept. on the chopping block is mean and not well thought out. Go cut math or history or departments that are NOT remarkable.

This Sophie's Choice gamesmanship is not a good sign or indicator of good top management.

Save UMKC Theatre. Cut central admin. I don't see them having THEIR jobs on the chopping block!

  8. KC is a great theater town if you have never lived a thousand miles east or west of Green Acres.

  9. The theatre department, as artsy-fartsy as it may be with some of its shows, is a great resource for Kansas City.

From a personal point of view, I hope it remains a strong local amenity.

  10. It is a strong theater department, and I hope it survives intact. That said, maybe the best solution is not to throw more money at it, but to cut other areas of UMKC. I'm thinking of you, bloated administrative staff, diversity and inclusion deans, and grievance studies teachers.

  12. Any of you young hot college girls who want to make some bucks acting in porn should contact me and make arrangements to sign up for my apprentice workshop. You be convinced that college theater is for gays and losers by the time we get done with you.

  13. The point that the Save Theater group is ignoring and not addressing is how much they cost the university (2.5 million) and how much they bring in to the university (<1 million). Further, the cut is due to the 20-30 MILLION dollar cut from the state. If you are that concerned about your program, take yourselves to Jeff City.

  14. The difficult decisions they are not making are cutting the six figure salary administers who aren't necessary. One manages the capable director of KCUR. There is also duplication in the alumni office that is unnecessary since there is a foundation that actually raises money. Everyone is looking in the wrong places. Start with the administration especially the top assistant administrators, especially in the Provost's office where she has added several six figure positions in the last year. Cutting hard working groundsmen and administrative assistants won't solve the problem.
