Kansas City Airport Meeting Clip: Council Majority Will Okay Burns & Mac NO BID Deal

Round-up of recent discussion . . . They'll be more today . . .

Also, here's one of Kansas City's top consultant and pundits showing just a bit of hateration for old school members of the discourse . . .

Local consultant Jon Stephens: "No offense, but it looks like the 55+ demo is over represented. Perhaps this discussion needs more 25-49 year-olds engaged."

And while the "don't trust anybody over 30" ethos is a throwback to different era in American Discourse . . . Once again it's curious to see consultants and middle-class white people fighting for influence in support of ONE OF THE MOST CORRUPT DEALS IN KANSAS CITY HISTORY TO BENEFIT A GLOBAL CORPORATION.

As for the council vote . . . We covered that earlier in the week and insiders agree that the decision will be close and leave a BILLION-DOLLAR NO-BID CAMPAIGN against a small group of local tax fighters.

You decide . . .

  1. I would think that people with the wisdom of age and the patience to study a huge expenditure to insure that it is a good investment should be over represented. The others are just sitting in the audience staring at their spinners.

  2. What Stephens means, of course, is that there are too many adults who have actual careers, own property, pay taxes, can make thoughtful well-informed decisions, have voted and been dedicated to their communities for decades, and can easily recognize a charade when they see one.
What he wants are millenials who still live in their parents' basements, who have "jobs" in the sharing economy, have attention spans which cause them to race from one BIG NEW THING to the next, think that TED Talks are really what life's all about, and will move out of KCMO as soon as they mature sufficiently to decide on priorities like families, safe neighborhoods, and good schools.
The kiddie corps really doesn't have much of a handle on long-term thinking, municipal responsibilities, debt, or the importance of basics like good streets and safe neighborhoods.
Every day is downtown Disneyland Day and the airport is just the latest in a long list of mesmerizing shiny things.
But the folks who Stephens so casually dismisses will still be around to try to pick up the pieces.

  3. We were there at this meeting where the City and their "owners" told us what we are going to receive. They didn't offer any other choices, such as the excellent Crawford Architects design for a lot less money. I hope that the voters don't drink the Kool-aid and pass this "under-the-table" deal.

  4. I have gradually become convinced of the need for a new terminal. Rehabbing the existing terminal(s) would be a stop gap measure at best. Based on my own travel experiences and many other factors I think a single terminal makes sense. Travelers deal with the extra distance from gate to parking all the time in every other major airport. The same people who complain about walking 3 blocks from gate to parking then go to Mall of America and walk 10 blocks in 3 hours of shopping. We will adapt.

A lingering question for me is exactly who signs the debt - is it Burns&Mac or KCMO. Or is the debt holder Burns&Mac with a KCMO guarantee. Stated differently, in the event of default === Who owes the money? Who owns the airport?

  5. 10:12 Not sure of the paper legalities but let's say the airport simply cannot generate the revenue to pay the bonds. Do you think KCMO would just let them default? Do you think B & M would make good on them? The buyers of these bonds know that the city is indirectly on the hook and will make good on them.

  6. Pendergast International.

  7. 11:00 is right. An airport is too big to fail, so a taxpayer bailout would occur.

That's why just doing normal municial bond financing, which would be cheaper, makes more sense.

  10. Why does KC want to control the airport? Let it move over to Kansas or anywhere there might be some fiscal responsibility and common sense applied. This damn airport is becoming another KC Taj Mahal project. Once you gt past th fundamental purpose of an airport it just becomes a bloated mess and no matter what promises are made (or lies are told) in the end the tax payers get it right in the shorts. Can KC ever say no to this shit or is the whole damn town helpless?

  12. I'm glad the milinials didn't show up because they're too stupid to know any better, brainwashed by the almighty Obama

  13. The whole damn town is helpless. Hardly anyone votes, and the city council knows it. To many coon's. They don't vote. Their looking for the next freebie. No Time to vote or speak their minds until a white officer shoots a coon. Even if that coon is committing a crime.
