Yep, he sure showed those suburban homeowners... meanwhile, back at Tony Botello's mom's basement....
When was this critique new and original? Fifteen years ago?
Having taken many Parade of Homes tours over the years, I had to laugh at his comments. Most of the "new" homes look just like the homes from 10-15 years ago. Find it hard to believe that people actually buy this crap. Must be dazzled by the "gold" bathroom fixtures, eh?
I've lived in crummy apartment dwellings in the city and fancy digs in the burbs. The burbs sure are nicer and they sure are safer, thank you very much.
This site is beyond wonderful. I am in the process of "re-desecrating" my own modest McMansion in Shawnee. This one made fun of me--but worth it. The author really has an eye for what's wrong. And I go to lots of upscale estate sales in Leawood and Mission Hills, where the misguided compulsion to replicate Versailles is like a virus in their water supply. High-larious.By the way, the author of McMansionsFromHell is Kate. Not a guy. I found two other posts, from Connecticut (more excessive budget and a French door sickness, plus a kitchen with FOUR sinks!) and Des Moines/(just so pathetic, bad taste, but then you're just shopping an Younkers) Polk County Iowa that are even worse than the Joco story. Can you imagine if Kate ever succeeds in publishing a book? A coffee table book of bad design? She could invite her neighbors and serve a signature cocktail: Hemlock Martini--because hemlock so compliments the juniper in the Bombay Sapphire gin.
I just found a comprehensive interview with Kate Wagner, the publisher/author of McMansionsFromHell.com.She's a grad student studying acoustics. And has monetized her blog enough to pay herself $1950 a month. Good for her!http://www.papermag.com/mcmansion-hell-tumblr-1994391954.html
