TKC EXCLUSIVE AFTERMATH!!! MAYOR SLY RECAPTURES THE CROWN AS 'KING OF KANSAS CITY' AMID WINNERS AND LOSERS OF EPIC MUNICIPAL ELECTION 2017!!!

More than anything else, last night's vote was a test of Mayor Sly's ability to champion regressive taxes utilizing his cult of personality. Like it or not, the victory was impressive.

But the reality beyond the chatter of clueless and cowardly pundits is that last night's election victory was mostly an achievement for Kansas City's corporate ruling class.

Law firms, consultants, construction dudes and a litany of local pezzonovante can now claim their piece of property taxes paid by po'folk and the working class for "infrastructure improvements" that are mostly a matter of faith. History tells us that very few of these big promises will ever materialize.

Still, there's no point in being pessimistic and right now it's appropriate to celebrate the victories.

Check the big winners . . .

Kansas City Grassroots Advocacy Works!!!

We noted as much last month: Grassroots advocates with community support win the day in these smallish local elections. It shouldn't have been any surprise to our blog community that Questions 3, 4 & 5 earned approval from voters given so many locals have been committed to these causes for the long haul. Activists for these measures deserve high praise for their commitment which spans years.

Freedom, Inc. Led Question 4 Coalition To Win New Hope For Prospect Corridor

Whilst Mayor Sly & crew spent big money for their win, Question 4 supporters risked only about $17000 for an unprecedented victory most thought wasn't achievable. They even had to fight Council rep, Alissia Canady to finally earn her support along with votes from throughout the suburban neighborhoods to help spark development for the inner-city.

Council Lady Teresa Loar Deserves Question 3 Animal Shelter Accolades

Behind the scenes, Council lady Teresa Loar helped focus pet lovers in their efforts for a new shelter. The hottie blonde Tori Fugate from the KC Pet Project is getting all the press and she deserves it because of her enthusiasm and because she had to entertain the creepy on-air flirtations of Johnny Dare via radio interview . . . However, if we're talking about legislation and "herding cats" when it comes to actually helping to put an ordinance together . . . Council lady Teresa Loar did a lot of the heavy lifting. Her reward for all this effort is even more work because now she'll have to fight the City Manager's office to get the funds that were promised but not specially mandated by dollar amount for the new shelter.

Kansas City Marijuana Reform Advocates Scored The Greatest Election Victory!!!

This deserves to be highlighted . . .

KANSAS CITY WEED SMOKERS AND SUPPORTERS EARNED THE BIGGEST ELECTION MARGIN OF VICTORY!!!

We can talk about power players and influence peddlers all day . . . But the people of Kansas City want their weed without the threat of much police interference.

The newspaper "reporting" and old school campaign against this effort was deceptive and cynical. The reality is that Question 5 advocates represent the first step toward local marijuana legalization and their cause was more popular than any other on the ballot.

Now . . . We must commiserate with those Kansas City metro denizens on the losing side of the vote . . .

Tax Fighter Crosby Kemper III Might Have Cried Himself To Sleep Last Night On A Huge Pillow Stuffed With $100 Bills

Here's another thing we need to get straight for causal denizens of our local Democracy and those who overestimate their influence.

To wit . . .

THERE WAS NO ORGANIZED OPPOSITION AGAINST GO BOND QUESTIONS 1-2-3!!!

No yard signs, no official commercials, no campaign HQ and not even much of a bank account against an election push worth MILLIONS.

Crosby Kemper III and his Show-Me Institute homies deserve the blame for this tragic state of tax fighter campaign affairs that's mostly due to the fact that Mr. Kemper doesn't like getting his hands dirty with the grunt work and ethically ambiguous duties of a municipal campaign. Polite chatter at the library is great but walking dangerous neighborhoods, getting doors slammed in your face and suffering the threats and rebuke of the unwashed masses has never been the strong suit of the library honcho despite his service as the chairman of the board of the Show-Me Institute.

To be fair . . . It's very nice of him to let the hobos hang out in the Library all day.

But I digress . . .

Because we can't expect his employees and underlings (read: everyone) to inform Crosby III of the facts . . . Let's make it plain . . . Polite conversation and British voice-over documentaries aren't going to win Kansas City elections. And if the effete Conservative denizens of Kansas City don't have the guts to run a REAL OPPOSITION CAMPAIGN BEYOND CHEAPSKATE SOCIAL MEDIA CHATTER then they deserve to lose every local vote.

KC doesn't have a Donald Trump and that means local tax fighters are going to have to work harder to make sure their voices are heard now that Mayor Sly's tax & spend agenda is picking up momentum.

Speaking of . . .

Tracy Thomas Tried Her Best!!!

Our blog community loves Tracy Thomas and she's one of the few locals willing to put her money where her mouth is and stand up against higher taxes. Her bloggy campaign effort and radio blitz wasn't successful but that doesn't mean it wasn't courageous.

Welcome To Brave New World Of Even Worse Kansas City Water Bills

Once again, lower income residents are the biggest losers in the aftermath of an election to raise their cost of living even higher. KCMO taxes and fees continually rise and nothing that happened last night will alleviate the water bill crisis that continues to drown the working poor and Kansas City in worsening debt.

As always, we invite our readers to participate in this post-election goodness and consider the implications for the future.

You decide . . .

  1. Don't blame me.

    I voted for Johnson.

  2. Not really a strange vote.

I think Question five is, in fact, the wave of the future and less restrictions on marijuana might be the "magic bullet" that KC has in winning the border war against Kansas.

Cheap and relatively legal weed will lure people to KCMo a lot better than drink specials in Johnson County.

  3. The vote was rigged.

Let's ask Trump for a recall or at least a full investigation.

  4. As predicted, Peckerwoods sat on their fat assess and screwed themselves. Now they will go to the blogs and cry like snowflakes. Suck it up lazy asses. You are gonna pay now and you have 40 years to think about it. Now explain to me how any of this shit wold make a working American want to buy a home or move his family to Kansas Shitty? This vote guarantees the burbs will flourish. Good work boys.

  5. Congratulations KCMO residents!
You've now given the folks at 12th and Oak access to almost a billion dollars with the assurance that they will exercise all the competence, honesty, and accountability they have demonstrated with your money in the past.
You know how your basement floods pretty much every time it rains?
You're tired of navigating that terrible sidewalk outside your house?
And this "plan" is going to address those very legitimate concerns?
    Hahahahahaha!!!
Thanks for funding a worthless streetcar extension, an arts campus downtown for UMKC, a new hotel that can't find any serious private investors, and who knows what else.
And it's a forty-year deal, so you're stuck in this marriage with divorce not an option without moving to a much better place.
You really can't make this stuff up.

  8. YOU CANT GET TAXES IF EVERYONE MOVES OUT WHAT A DUMP

  9. Moving is the only option. White people let us down majorly.

  10. Congrats KC you just taxed yourself right out of your home, if your house value drops you now have no way to lower your tax, the bond you just passed is set for 40 years, and will go up without your consent if there is a default, and KC has a bad credit rating so a default is highly likely, and given the fact that KC is mismanaged it was a high risk to take.

But hey, you can look at it the way the other person on here looks at it...cheap and legal weed will lure people into the city. Maybe true, but I wonder what kind of people will be lured into the city???? People who will productively give back to the community????

I'm thankful I just sold my house high while people were paying too much, and waiting for the outcome of this issue I know now not to buy another house in KC.

  11. welcome to kansas, toto.

property taxes are medium-high, but you get good schools and good services.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Not surprising that all tax increases pass in KCMO. Most logically thinking people gave up on KCMO and moved out. What's left are the Bernie supporters who always support more government spending.

  13. Thanks for the praise, Tony. I did blog, but it was Phillip Klein, the watchdog hero and movie producer ("Begging for Billionaires" and now working on "Fly Like a Bumblebee") who paid $10 grand out of his POCKET for the radio campaign. You were so right, no official commercials--just "Educate and Inform".

But we were up against a tsunami of lies by Steve Glorioso and Sly James with that wall of brochures. And Micheal Mahoney refused to set the record straight--while he DID say 40 years, he still reported the preposterous lie, $8 a year for 20.

So look at the votes this way--human nature votes for their enlightened self interest. Marijuana decriminalization? Check. Received the highest votes--71%. (And don't believe you can't get representation--just ask Legal Aid. The gummint is not the boss of them.)

Issue 4/Prospect corridor passed with 52%--but because it's just a city-wide sales tax, not supported by the gun-to-the-throat property tax to finance rich investors buying GO bonds--a simple majority was all that took. And don't we all love seeing Sly James choke that one down, since it was pulled off by Freedom behind his back.

Issue 3/billed widely as Pet Shelter when that's $14 million out of $50 million for handicap access that is the law and should not be an "amenity"--well, Tony nailed it--props to Theresa Loar and the KC Pet Project grass roots campaign.

Now here's something interesting--flood control #2 received the lowest margin of success--when that is one of KC's most glaring problems.

Instead, the promise of FREE sidewalks received more votes. Enlightened self-interest. If you think you can get a $14,000 sidewalk for $8--you're sure to play the lottery tonight. Even if it's $100, you'd still buy the ticket.

Imagine the voters' surprise when they realize they were bamboozled!

Most of all, Tony, you nailed it--the rich white men who are in already tax-abated buildings ran a campaign of lies and false promises--and won. Proving once again, you can fool at least 66% of the people SOME of the time.

  19. Did anyone else notice the 10pm news lineup? Not one station led with the election results. True, they were scrolling it at the bottom of the screen, but it was all weather--and dead bodies.

Most stations gave a brief GO Bond victory story from Union Station (another tax-supported money pit project), around 10:06--then it was back to reporting a possible?? tornado in some bumf%$# town called Goodland Mo--SOUTH OF JOPLIN!!!!, then back to pictures of Kara Kopecke for an unconfirmed speculation of her bones...

As the Assignment Editors at each TV station will tell you, off the record, "weather drives viewers. So our bosses told us, if PR flacks want a story, tie them they must tie it to the weather." All the local stations were just reporting what real viewers care about--do I need to wear a raincoat tomorrow?

    Here's a teaser for tonight's news:

  29. well well well let me start by saying that Tracy was not the only one to speak out openly and unabashedly about this vote on their blog, John OBrien at the AIEBC stood up and wasnt afraid to say that we were giving nearly 1 BILLION dollars to a group of people that had the mental capacity of a drunk three year old and hoping for the best.
I myself am selling my house and moving outside the grip of this insanity, I refuse to support contractors like Dunn and Burns & Mac and special interest and where ever else they will spend this money, here before to long the animals, stray dogs etc will be living, eating and lounging FAR better than the poor who will be supporting this tax. It almost reminds you of the commercial they took off the air awhile back ago when a person was trying to give a presentation while monkeys were throwing shit around the room .. good luck you fucking morons who voted for this

  30. Tony you've ended up as a pretty big loser in all of this with all your paid $how-Me Institute advertisements and your really bad attempts to lie and twist the reality of the math around.

I won't even say "nice try," because it was all pretty reprehensible.

But now you have tons of time to go find Jack The Ripper. I'd get right on that 'cause he's still out there right?

Good on Teresa Loar for recently re-inventing herself after thirty years of questionable political activity.

Lest ye forget the quantifiable big profit from the $800 million bonds is to the bond dealers and bond lawyers.

Standard three percent to each group for a bond sales will only be $24,000,000.00 off the top. Total of $48,000,000.
