TKC BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS!!! AFTER $800-MILLION GO BOND VICTORY, KANSAS CITY ZOO SUPPORTERS DEMAND TO MOVE FORWARD WITH NEW AQUARIUM!!!

A tidal wave of funding requests are now flooding City Hall following the recent bond election win. The latest splash is a longstanding effort to continue Kansas City Zoo improvements with a fishy project that has been part of an ongoing local conversation for years.

Moreover . . .

SUPPORT FOR THE KANSAS CITY ZOO AQUARIUM RUNS DEEP AMID AN ONGOING RACE TO BUILD A BIGGER LOCAL FISH TANK!!!

Hard to believe???

Our TKC blog community broke the news last year . . . Dead Tree Media even confirmed the tragic notion of a new KC Zoo Aquarium using GO BOND cash much later.

And here's the kicker . . .

THERE'S ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IN WRITING THAT SAYS GO BOND MONEY CAN'T BE USED FOR A NEW AQUARIUM!!!

The Mayor and City Council attempted to play the little dutch boy and put their finger in the dike (ewwwww) to prevent public suspicion that MOST OF THE GO BOND MONEY IS UP FOR GRABS . . . But vague ballot language suggests otherwise.

In fact, cash for a new aquarium can easily qualify as an improvement to a public building noted in Question 3.

Moreover, most adults realize that the promises from politicos are easily broken and City Hall cash can shift as easily as the tides.

The critical point here deserves to be repeated time and time again . . . With very little binding ballot language, supporters of a new aquarium understand that they're well within their rights to ask for a share of GO BOND MONEY . . . Given the strong level of public support for the Zoo, they're likely to succeed . . . And once again, despite a recent cash influx, the misplaced priorities of local leaders AND voters threaten to sink Kansas City further into debt.

Comments

  1. Correction. The go bonds are not a cash influx, they're a debt influx.

  2. Can we just put the fishes in one of the bigger potholes?

  3. The aquarium is the "missing piece" for the zoo. KC is already committed to the future of our Zoo so it makes sense to continue the investment. I don't think we need to directly access the money from the bonds but now we have room to start planning the new aquarium and FINALLY have this conversation.

Kansas City voters have invested in our city's future, it's time to make sure that investment pays off by supporting our zoo!

  4. At least the aquarium has the potential to pay its own way after we're finished building it, the animal shelter is nothing but a consistent money loser.

  5. The kicker is KCMO does not have enough manpower in public works to even fix a pothole in a timely manner.

    1. Try driving on Topeka streets they are worse then Kansas City, MO streets.

  6. Go ahead. The multi million dollar Sea Life aquarium at Crown Center is a joke and a waste of money. 20 min start to finish

  7. It's not about the tax ... It's about the debt!

  8. Or maybe the idea of capturing animals and sealife to confine them in small spaces for the viewing pleasure of a few isn't so progressive after all.

  9. Make sure you do a cost analysis on this project - My water bill is $300 per month for a family of 4 - What will the cost be to fill up those fish tanks?
With the FU water rates, it will be more expensive to fill those tanks than to build them.

  10. Go For KC, where have you been in the last few years? You think Aquariums and dolphin shows are the wave of the future? Seaworld is doing great, maybe hire them as a consultant to build this aquarium.

  11. And so it begins. Hands are out everywhere for a piece of the action. Trading political support for public dollars. It should be interesting, if disgusting, to see it all go down.

  12. Should go slow on that Clay County could just stop paying the Zoo tax if the go bonds don't pay for Northland improvements .

  13. What a poorly run city I live in. Clay County should absolutely quit paying the Zoo tax. How much of my water bill goes to satisfy the lawsuits fil d against it?

  14. Surely "Go for Kansas City" can't possibly be an actual person, and certainly not a serious one.
    Rah, rah, rah!
There's always another "missing piece" in the endless list of "projects" which are supposed to make KCMO something that it clearly is not.
    Bartle Hall expansion,
    followed by more hotel,
followed by a new airport terminal, followed by more money spent on "Smart City" toys,
followed by whatever the latest consultant to visit city hall can sell the rubes so that "they don't get left behind".
Meanwhile KCMO is just over 20% of the metro population, sinks further into debt, doesn't maintain what it already owns, has the highest utility bills in the region, is the fifth worst-managed city in the US, and regularly has a homicide rate fully one-third that of New York City, which is 17 times as large.
    Fantasyland on the plains.

  15. Another SLY waste of money.

  16. You kno9w KC is brain dead when the citizens vote for the city to take their money and beat them stupid with it.

  17. Things are regional, zoos need to be more conservation and highlight natural resources/species of an area, or a species that could live there. Aquarium is not really a strength move for KC unless it was an interaction that integrated the Blue River. At this point that interaction would just be a water closet and an algae bloom. So, yes, an aquarium without interaction of species of proximal water habitat within a clean Blue River is ridiculous.
