TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! COMPRESSOR BRAKING CONTROVERSY CONFRONTS EMBATTLED KANSAS CITY TOY TRAIN STREETCAR!!!

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of KICK-ASS TKC BLOG COMMUNITY . . . Kansas City streetcar supporters can never say that they weren't warned about treacherous toy train problems which threaten the safety of local residents on downtown streets.

To wit . . .

THANKS TO KICK-ASS TKC TIPSTERS FOR CALLING OUT THE KANSAS CITY STREETCAR COMPRESSOR ISSUES THREATENING TOY TRAIN BRAKES!!!

Here's the word based on difficulties with the KCMO design documented by better news outlets along with behind the scenes advocacy brought to light EXCLUSIVELY by our AWESOME TKC blog community.

Here's the word:

"Last week I called attention to maintenance issues with streetcars in other cities. Seattle's streetcar skid 2.5 blocks through traffic and amazingly didn't kill anyone. Cincinnati's streetcar is having compressor issues in 4 out of 5 of their streetcars, which impacts their ability to brake.

"We have the exact same streetcar as Cincinnati so I find it hard to believe that ours aren't experiencing similar problems. Particularly because I've been on the streetcar when it was raining and it was having trouble braking. Lo and behold, it's raining this morning and the streetcar service is being supplemented with buses, and the explanation is the streetcar is having "maintenance issues"

"It's time journalists in KC get to the bottom of this. Tom Gerend assured me that he is aware of problems with streetcars in other cities but I had to ask him about it. Why has KCRTA not issued a statement about this prior to a random citizen inquiring about it? Whoever runs the @kcstreetcar Twitter account says the compressors are fine, but I think we deserve proof of that. What is the maintenance issue that has crippled #kcstreetcar service this rainy Monday morning and how can we be reassured that the streetcar can adequately brake?"

  1. Is this why the average wait time for the streetcar is closer to a half an hour than the promised 15 minutes.

Really ridiculous that I've stood around when I could've taken a cab or walked in half the time that it takes to get down the line. The only sense that it makes is maybe to the city market and back but the process is really just quicker if I schedule a later lunch and just park my car.

    1. Two bad wrecks so far and one side swipe. Maybe it's time to stop blaming drivers for these collisions and look at the root causes.

  2. I hate to point out that "I told you so" but this is what happens when City Hall officials don't make it a priority to buy American products from American manufacturers. These euro-trash CAF Urbos streetcars are impractical and cheap. We should have looked around more and found a way to buy American. I don't like riding this flimsy import, now even more so given the braking danger.

  13. Look at this quote from a Cincinnati news story:

Hilvers later confirmed Friday afternoon that Kansas City's new streetcar system -- the only other in the country to use this vehicle model -- has seen similar issues, although KC Streetcar spokeswoman Donna Mandelbaum declined to comment on the specific nature of technical issues seen in their streetcar vehicles.

  15. That would be so cute to see it sliding down the Main Street hills south of Pershing Road if they ever extended it to UMKC. The tourist train would now become a roller coaster with no brakes.

  22. It seems the City of KCMO can't put the brakes on--the toy train any more than they can put the brakes on their endless attempts to spend money recklessly. Voters don't trust them. The pollsters for Steve Glorioso have secretly leaked just how in trouble the 123GO Bond issue is April 4. The voters need to send a message to the council--even when you pretend to tell the truth, you don't.
You lied today about the toy train is in the shop for "unspecified maintenance".
You're lying next week about the projects.
And you don't tell the BIG truth which is, even if Shields and Jolie pass some ordinance right after the election, THE CITY CAN STILL BORROW MONEY FROM THE 123 FUNDS--and pay it back later, when they get around to doing a project.

That's what's wrong. Constant borrowing. The City Council are a bunch of carnival grifters running an endless shell game.
LOL--the verify quiz to prove I am not a robot had a quiz--click all photos that contain a bus!!!!

  28. 6:17pm asks a very serious question:
Wasn't the explanation and some of the rationale for how much the streetcar project cost and how long it took was because ALL the utility work and upgrades along the Main Street route?
    Yes it was.
Isn't 16th and Main along the route?
    Yes it is.
Want to see this trick again?
Pass the $800 million bond issue.
Just look at how much money has already been spent on the GO campaign, where it has come from, and who has gotten it.
If that's not enough to vote NO, not much is!

    ReplyDelete
  29. ^^^ Excellent point.

KC is just one big con game. Glad to see that TV news is at least doing some reporting on this because I didn't see the water main break or the streetcar shut down in the newspaper at all. They're becoming just a press outlet for city hall.

It is so sad maybe making another HOORAH video will help this poor sick TOOT TOOT get well.
