Or, at the very least, public radio newsies checked our EPIC conversation and actually decided to do a bit of follow-up on concerns confronting a great many local residents there were UNREPORTED in local media before WE started talking about it.

Speaking on the eve of Trump’s executive order, Mayor Sly James said that city police don’t intend to do the federal government’s heavy lifting.
“Our police department has no desire and no interest in enforcing immigration laws,” James said Tuesday. “That’s the federal government’s part, not ours. They won’t do it. They haven’t done it, and they probably won’t do it unless they are absolutely forced to do it. But we believe if the feds want people to do something, they need to get their tails down and get it done. We’re not going to help them.”
James spoke as part of a panel discussion on the impact of neighborhoods on education. His comments were part of a broader conversation about the potential impact of enforcement on communities.
“Why do we want to go in and disrupt neighborhoods, disrupt families where people are living peacefully?” James asked. “People who break the law should be handled. People who are not breaking the law should be left alone.”
But the Kansas City Police Department is under the control of a state-appointed board of commissioners, not the mayor. On Thursday, a police spokeswoman would neither confirm nor disavow the mayor’s remarks.
“KCPD does not have specific guidelines and all inquiries are referred to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security,” Sgt. Kari Thompson wrote in an email statement. “We defer to ICE on all interactions and enforcement concerning those who are undocumented. We refer to them and our actions are guided by this agency.”
Thompson had no comment on the implications of the executive order for the department. And on Thursday, the mayor’s office reaffirmed its opposition to asking local agencies to enforce immigration law...

ReplyDeleteI can tell you from numerous interactions with KCPD officers that many of them desperately want to deport illegal immigrants but have been frustrated with the lack of support or resources from the federal government.

Since when is following the laws on the books a valid reason to undermine the United States Government? How can anyone be so stupid as to follow this kind of leadership example? Our borders are so irrationally insecure, that the threat of terrorists entering the USA is real. The wall and other measures taken by this president, will stem the flow of drugs, guns and criminals into America.
Trump should suspend ALL Muslim immigration period. There are MANY polls taken over the last 10 years, the most noteworthy is a PEW Report (Hardly a bastion of conservative thought.) that reveals a 51% majority of Muslims, here in the US NOW, support Sharia Law and violence in the effort to establish Sharia Law. It is NOT just a few Skittles, it is half of the fuckin bag.
The protection of the American People should be the number one priority of the Federal Government.
Trump has promised to put America first and, so far, so good.
To me anymore if Mayor James lips are moving, it can only be bad for Kansas City.
ReplyDeleteFor a Mayor the size of Kansas City or any other Mayor for that matter, who says they will not aid in the enforcement of federal laws, that are and have been in the books for a significant period of time, signals to me that this country has a lot of people in office who are clueless as to what the laws of this nation truly are.
It does appear to me that our new President is only taking action on and enforcing well established laws that many of his predecessors have chosen to ignore. In short he is doing his job and leading the nation
Maybe that is the reason Donald Trump was elected as President of this country by those who are tired of seeing the laws of this country ignored and not being enforced.

I have to agree with 8:24 and I can tell you that even back in the 80's Immigration would advise local law enforcement to cut illegals loose as they would not get off their bureaucratic asses and pick them up.
ReplyDeleteOne of the sad things about Federal Law Enforcement is that they are turned into paper pushers pretty fast and law enforcement efforts can easily become second fiddle to accomplishing paper and administrative tasks that affect evaluations and promotions. For example ATF audits gun shops books, Sky Marshals inspect airports records, etc. Tasks that were created to fill slack time become mission essential in the game to build bigger agencies and bureaucracies. Additionally there are so many replications and stacks of bullish laws and regulations piled upon each other that the whole fucking Federal law enforcement effort has become one big bureaucratic clusterfuck.
There are over 105,000 full time Federal Agents (there are also part time Federal Officers) with arrest authority. That averages 2100 per state not counting Military, National Guard or Counter Intelligence Agents who also now have arrest authority. You have to wonder why the hell we allow all this paper pushing when we have those kind of numbers available in addition to 765,000 sworn state and local LE Officers in America. Why have we not thought outside the box and relocated resources before turning our cities into drug and murder centers?
Something has to give. If reestablishing law and order does not fit the program then how are we ever going to establish some sense of civic responsibility, let alone nurture law abiding citizens? There are ways to get laws changed. What we are witnessing isn't the way. Anyone who has studied concepts of civil disobedience has to know that there are limits and we are past them to the point of flirting with anarchy. Surely the United States of America has not transformed into a banana republic right before our eyes.

That's Sly James the man who preaches cooperation and working together, when it suits his needs and agenda, but otherwise, not so much.
If James had actually listened to President Trump the other day, he would have heard the statement that those who've been in this country for a number of years, lived peacefully, obeyed the laws, etc., have little to worry about. On the other hand, those who are here illegally, committing violence, involved in gangs and/or the drug trade, not working, will be dealt with harshly as they endanger lawful citizens.
James panders outrageously when he speaks of disrupting peaceful families and neighborhoods.
