Clay's latest effort has more support the previous streetcar expansion proposal from voters throughout the city . . . This is important as toy train ridership numbers continue to plummet.

Today, citizens of Kansas City will submit to the city a new streetcar expansion initiative (Plan B) that challenges the city's vision (Plan A) on how best to move the city forward around advances to the city's lacking public transportation system.
Currently, the city and streetcar supporters are backing Plan A which proposes extending the streetcar line to the Plaza / UMKC and doing it via a restricted election which prevents citywide voters from weighing in on this important civic decision.
Au contraire,' Plan B will not only transform the city's "Touristy Frou Frou" streetcar line into a rapid citywide rail system to more benefit the working man, but it also lets citywide voters decide the merits of the plan.
In general, Plan B proposes to begin transforming the city's ineffective and unpopular diesel bus transit system into a quiet, zero-emission and economic generating streetcar / electric bus system.
Specifically, Plan B is designed to expand the city's 2.2-mile downtown streetcar line into a 26-mile rapid citywide streetcar system that will connect the northland to the southland, the eastside to the westside and utilize an auxiliary electric bus system to expand its service area. This revolutionary streetcar system will feature streetcars traveling at faster speeds, stopping far less frequently and operating predominantly in Greenway corridors separated from traffic.
The cost of the this streetcar / electric bus system is $1.0 billion and its construction, operation and maintenance would be primarily funded via a 3/8-cent sales tax increase for 25-years and federal matching funds.
No city in the country has ever proposed such a smart, fast and convenient streetcar system. Kansas City will lead the way, get back to its transit roots and greatly benefit from its innovation.

What if all of the proposals pass? Will we get trains going everywhere. Will we get some trains and some toot toot trolleys all going down main street together?
ReplyDeleteThe only expansion I'd vote for is a one way line east to Virginia, with Clay on it. Get this guy out of here. Being a realist, however, I think our only hope is that he will get older and finally die of old age. He's totally clueless, though he's discovered anyone will sign a piece of paper outside a store.
