HERE'S FIRST WORD ON LOCAL ACTIVISTS CURRENTLY WORKING FOR KCPD "CITIZEN REVIEW" ARE NOW CONSIDERING TEAMING UP WITH THE NEW EFFORT TO BRING KCPD UNDER CITY HALL CONTROL!!!
Buried in the story revealing the news of a local control petition is a look at the designers of the effort . . .
"Jefferson City attorney Marc Ellinger presented the petition. He could not be reached for comment. Ellinger is a close ally of Rex Sinquefield, the millionaire businessman who has spent millions on conservative causes in Missouri, including a recent unsuccessful effort to end Kansas City’s earnings tax."
EXCLUSIVELY on TKC here's a word from a Kansas City activist currently involved in the Citizen Review effort considering the petition . . .
"For us the timing SUCKS, we have been trying to establish a Citizen Review process and we're just starting to meet with commissioners. We know that Sly's in favor of local control but with the others, we were subtly threatening a local control petition to get what we wanted, with plans to eventually pursue it anyway. We want local control but we have been using it as a threat to get some changes made within KCPD first."
And while this effort wasn't a surprise . . . There's no doubt that resistance is also soon forthcoming.
The Kansas City activist responds to some concerns we mentioned:
KCPD used to say, "We don't want any single council person to try to control how we staff or patrol their district." Which is illogical because aren't their twelve of them . . . The others would prevent that And no one said local control meant council control . . . Now, KCPD says, we don't want local control because look at what a mess St Louis is . . . Look at every other department in the nation, (it's an) idiot argument but the public will buy it . . . "
And all of this informs us that Mayor Sly is going to want in on the action, too . . .

I guess that's why we haven't heard a peep from the Mayor or council about the homicide rate. They want people to be scared in order to approve the decision. I hope it works, it would be a shame to have another year with so many murders.
DeleteChanging the board of directors has never saved a failing company. When organizations have a culture of failure it's very difficult to change. It's even tougher to change when employees cannot be terminated.
ReplyDeleteHow well does the City run the Water Department? The answer to that should be enough if you want the Mayor and City Council to have more control of the police department.

ReplyDeleteThe Police should be privatized. New employees should bid for the amount of pay they will work for- those who do well with their financial health can bid for a lower salary. Squad cars are great- but most cops should be able to ride a bike on their route.
ReplyDeleteCriminals can help save money by walking round with solar panels on their head and charge batteries for the squad cars. Carwash Cleaver can do weekly speaking engagements with other community organizers and wind farms could use their hot air to power KC.
Since old Carwash Cleaver can be in town- he can hand out pre-approved Credit Cards and help people declare bankruptcy so they pay back nothing.
Maybe Alonzo can team up with Mary, Barb and Yael and sell Kleenex's al la Post Trump- and pay people to not do crime. For each murder folks agree to not do- they get a free burger. That could feed a family for a year.
If you think these ideas are whacky- remember what Lewis Duigoody 2 shoes wrote as for his thinking immediately after 911as to why it might have happened.
