SHOCK!!! FLASH FLOOD SINKS KANSAS CITY THANKS TO BUSTED STORM SEWER SYSTEM AND STREETCAR DOESN'T WORK IN RAIN!!!

Last night rain proved that Kansas City infrastructure is desperately in need of repair and new development toys championed by City Hall don't hold up in bad weather.

To wit . . .

TKC REALITY CHECK: BLAME KANSAS CITY POLITICOS FOR THEIR FAILURE TO FOCUS ON THE BROKEN STORM SEWER SYSTEM FOR LAST NIGHT'S FLOODING!!!

As usual, MSM is missing the story and mistakenly thinks that Summer rain is uncommon . . . The reality is the flooding is the symptom of the $2.5 BILLION worth of infrastructure storm sewer repair mandated by the EPA but still incomplete thanks to City Hall's toy train and luxury living space development priorities.

Once again for the cheap seats . . .

THE RAIN WAS BAD BUT NOTHING FREAKISH AND REALLY JUST REVEALS KANSAS CITY'S INFRASTRUCTURE SUFFERS FROM HORRIFIC NEGLECT!!!

Tragically, the only solution offered here is about a BILLION worth of General Obligation Bonds and higher taxes that will soon earn a public vote.

LIKE IT OR NOT KANSAS CITY, THAT WASN'T RAIN THAT WAS SEWER WATER DROWNING KANSAS CITY!!!

Let that sink in for a second when we talk about "smart city" hype our creative class and the future of this town.

In the meantime, check our comprehensive overview of the damage with video and some great links:

  1. Not sewer water.

    Toilet water.

And I thought westport was normally full of turds.

  10. What diseases can you get from sewage water?

Hepatitis A, polio, and viral gastroenteritis are a few of the diseases that can be contracted from viruses in wastewater. HIV IS NOT TRANSMITTED THROUGH WASTEWATER CONTACT. There may be as many as 100 different virus types present in raw sewage, but they are difficult to identify.

READ IT AGAIN. YOU CAN GET POLIO FROM KANSAS CITY TURD WATER. Better stay out of town for a few weeks.

  12. Q.: How do you stop Kansas City people from murdering each other?

A.: Fill their streets and basements with floating turds.

  13. We hopped off the streetcar on 5th street around 8:30 and ran to our vehicles (parked by Minskeys) but the crosswalk was filled with ankle deep water. By 9:15 they had to suspend streetcar service. The city bragged that when they built streetcar, they replaced the oldest sewer lines it the city; some of the pipes were even made from wood (??) So with a brand new sewer along the streetcar, I'm not sure why so much water was pooling in areas designed for folks to cross the street, or why streetcar service would have to be suspended. It rains like this at least once if not 2-3 times a year.

  22. The City has been spending tax money designated for sewer repair for these development projects. They will do the same with the billion dollar general obligation bonds. The sewers will not be repaired until we clean out the corruption in City Hall who are owned by "developers".

  23. The streetcar had to shut down because of rain, but I bet the buses were still running.

So anyway we got some of them damn buses in to git passengers to their desired destinations! N' don't forget to vote for the extension!

  26. But look on the bright side.
Thousands of tourists from Venice, Italy are loading into 747s right now to visit the city of canals on the plains.
And they're just a small part of the more than 24 million tourists who pour into KCMO every year.

  30. The $2.5 Billion is for the Sanitary (poop) Sewer and doesn't touch the storm water Tony. Everything spent on sanitary does absolutely nothing for rain!

The almost $1 Billion G.O. bonds, up for vote in Spring, you reference is just the beginning of Storm Water fixes. If these bonds are approved it will be another year before any construction happens!

EPA mandated KC separate sanitary from storm and all the energy has been on sanitary only. 13%-15% increases annually on sanitary sewer costs for 7+ years and at least 5 more years of it. Add it up and it equals over 100% increase so far and at least 50% more yet to come.

So please keep in mind the high cost of neglect!

  31. In other news, grifter city council women were fighting the cops, right up until the deluge began, to keep them from towing away their $60,000 luxury cars which they could not be bothered to keep legally registered because hey, who in the hood bothers with honky shit like keeping the car registration up to date?

  32. A few facts from science. The oceans are warming. The oceans are expanding because of this. There is also more evaporation from the seas as a result of the warming. Thus, more moisture in the air. Louisiana and yesterday in KC could become the new norm. City better quit spending money on frivolity and sock it away in contingency funds.

    ReplyDelete
  33. There is not enough money. There is not enough competent leadership. Worst of all, there is no longer a real reason to maintain KCMO as the capital of a metropolitan area of 3 million people. Once upon a time, there was no alternative. Today there is. Get used to the idea of Greater Metropolitan Johnson County. It is where you're from.

  39. I heard on TV news last night that water had RUN DOWN THE AISLE OF THE MIDLAND THEATRE downtown.

I saw no footage, and could not find a report about it this morning. So would appreciate any confirmation of such. To my knowledge, that has NEVER happened before. Is that from clogged storm drains downtown?? Someone please diagnose that.

Happy I moved my home and office out of midtown KC to Joco. It might be Stepford, but it's not like KC--America's little Chicago.

Leadership, priorities and values of KCMO elected officials are out of sync with managing your necessities. I agree with the above that KCMO is owned by developers. At least Polsinelli development lawyers were turned down this past week for two tax-abated projects on the Plaza--which is NOT blighted! Send those boys a Hallmark sympathy card, maybe the tide has turned.

The co-mingled storm and sanitary sewers have been a problem at least as far back as the Plaza flood in I think 1982. But it's not sexy to spend money on maintenance.
Every homeowner knows that. But it must be done first.

Pull the plug on the Toy Train. Can you imagine standing in there using your iPhone to chase Pokemon, when the water rushed thru the train's doors? Electricity and water do not mix. Is the City trying to compete for scariest trip, with the Edge of Hell or The Beast??! (I did like the commenter today calling it the Devil Train!)

    1. I can't find footage or reports of you giving handjobs in parking lots Tracy but I don't need any to know it's true.

What city will you be moving to?

      Delete
  40. 8:45 you are wrong. In downtown from the river(north)to 85th Street(south), from Stateline(west)to I-435(east) this area has combined sewers. That why the city has to spend billions to fix the mess.

    ReplyDelete
  41. "In the history of record keeping." Well, no. Possibly in the relatively short history of keeping local rainfall records. Being the 11th highest daily rainfall total in that period (assuming your facts are correct) may be unusual, but it is not freakish. According to NOAA, the record for daily rain in KCMO happened in 1982, and the wettest August was 1940.

  42. Thank you, Bob!!!

  43. "America's little Chicago"

Notice there is no media coverage on all the flooding downtown in the Holy Trolley Zone. No doubt promoted by shabby design and other things the Toot Toot's don't want to talk about.

  46. 11:44, Tracy moved to Joco in 1992. She was an elected official for five years in Shawnee, and ran for Chairman of the county commission. You are obviously out of the loop.

Now get back to commenting on the topic. Do you have anything of news to add? Have you helped anyone with a flooded car or basement today?

Let's keep pushing the MSM to cover the REAL news...Three inches of rain is not that much. It appears the storm drains which are co-mingled with the sanitary sewers were not handling the rain.

What happened on Southwest Blvd? That always used to be the vulnerable area, by the Mexican restaurants and the railroad tracks--that was 4 feet underwater even with a mild rain of one to two inches. Did that part of town get FIXED??

Someone around there or who drove thru there on their way home please report in.

  48. 1:27, not forgetting, but thanks for adding it to the list.

  49. yeah 6" of rain in two hours is nothing freakish....except it is.

So you guys are all meteorologists, or hydrologists, or what?

Because if you're not you should probably quit guessing about what causes flooding, other than all the money we've wasted on propping up black people that could have been spent on infrastructure.
