There's an image of Kansas City as a bustling metropolis where technology powers exponential growth and job creation. The reality is that the local economy has remained stagnant and struggles to keep jobs in the area amid border war competition and much more competitive macro-economic outsourcing forces.
Here's an important update that was mostly overlooked by happy talk mainstream media but sent our way by smarter denizens of our blog community . . .
TENTH DISTRICT MANUFACTURING ACTIVITY DECLINED MODESTLY
Money line . . .
Kansas City, Mo. - The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City released the May Manufacturing Survey today. According to Chad Wilkerson, vice president and economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, the survey revealed that Tenth District manufacturing activity declined modestly.
"Regional factory activity continued to drift down in May, as weakness in energy and agriculture-related manufacturing persisted," said Wilderson. "Still, firms excerpt a modest pickup in activity later this year."
Developing . . .
Pretty damn hard to work on business successes when you are breasts feeding a fucked up local government.
ReplyDeleteThe Construction workers are happy. All the shovel ready jobs.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised when I moved back here after 40 years in more employee-friendly states. Except for a few massive projects (the Kaufmann Center, the Sprint Center, etc), Kansas City looked just like it looked in the late 1960s. Ugly gray downtown, with uncrowded sidewalks, even on weekdays; lots of old brick buildings that have seen better days. Not as bad as Detroit or even Cleveland, for sure. KC still has a couple pleasant neighborhoods. But clearly a city that got left on the sidelines. There are more signs of life downtown now, but the fact remains that there is not the critical mass of money and people to make things really happen. Maybe after all the big suburban shopping malls are bulldozed?
ReplyDeleteThe jobs moved to Kansas and the liberals are trying to convince you otherwise, that's the real story TKC.
ReplyDeleteYEs, all things are a conspiracy by the LIBTARDS! ^^
ReplyDeleteAs a resident of this city, I can say these things with certainty. We live in a very left wing leaning city who sucks the life and money out of its citizens through fake tax initiatives and a corrupt city council. We keep all of the MoDot construction workers happy as they work on the same piece of road every single freaking year. (Job Security) We are an embarrassment to people who choose to vacation in the Kansas City area and we will soon become Detroit if we don't get rid of our Liberal mind set!
ReplyDelete@8:41AM. +1
ReplyDeleteI remember when I was a kid in the '80s all the jobs were downtown or close to it. Now all the jobs are in KS or one of the suburbs around here. Very few good non government jobs in KC proper. But as your saying Libs and people at the Star have been trying to bend over backwards to convince you that's not the case.
KCMO . Kansas City Missouri , now mostly, Liquor Stores, Payday loan shops, Chop Shops, Afro' Salons and other needless non revenue producing Crap for the city !!
ReplyDeleteGone are GM / General Motors , and many other Manufacturing industries that were stable and worthy, what few still excist won't be here long !!!
The K.C. Federal Reserve covers several states not just Kansas City.
ReplyDelete@9:04 nails it, the politics in kc chase away a lot of business.
ReplyDeleteOnce you drive pass Downtown, that's what a lot of the city looks like after the rain.
ReplyDeleteI never buy shit in Kansas City! I'll drive 20 minutes out of the way just to avoid spending money in this town. And online shopping is even better.
ReplyDeleteVery good comments from 7:40, 8:41, 9:04, 9:45
ReplyDelete9:53, you are correct, but note TKC quoted "Tenth District" at least twice. Not trying to twist anything.
Let's review ONCE MORE, KCMO Mayor and Council fueling growth in the suburbs of both MO and KS. Just review the last campaign contributions made to Mayor James re-election from Burns and McDonnell employees, just prior to their sweetheart deal in which the city paid for their new headquarters. Approximately 80+ percent of those BMc employees contributing, live outside KCMO. Now of course the truth is that no one living in Johnson County, Blue Springs, Lee's Summit, etc., really cares who the Mayor of KCMO is, and Burns and McDonnell corporate reimburses the employees for making the contribution in their own name.
3:54 certainly makes some very good points.
ReplyDeleteBut the sad fact is, nobody in KCMO seems to much care who their mayor is either.
