Three decades of misguided criminal justice policies have produced tragic consequences for American communities, driving the country’s inequality and poverty. One in three Americans have a criminal record, and nearly half of U.S. children have a parent with a criminal record, which present life-long barriers to opportunity—including employment, education, and housing—for entire families. The current legislation moving through Congress has the potential to increase the public safety of Colorado residents by ending unnecessarily harsh sentences and penalties and by eliminating barriers to opportunities for those with records, affording them and their families a second chance.

How in the fuck does letting felons out of prison increase public safety? Crime has gone down since the 1990s. Violent black males are the problem, and letting them out early helps how? Pandering for the black vote.

Most interactions between citizens and the criminal justice system takes place at the local or state levels.
Most disparate treatment, or that perceived to be, of minorities takes place at the local and state levels.
A majority of minority defendants are "represented" by the state public defender systems, which initiatives at the federal level don't address at all.
The results of all these endless meetings and all this talk will be some marginal reductions in federal sentences for non-violent drug crimes and a couple companies will make lots of money producing body cameras for various levels of law enforcement. And videos from the body cameras will show the kind of self-destructive behavior that the police are confronted by every day, which will be exactly the OPPOSITE of what the people demanding those cameras have in mind.
Sadly, the issue has faded from the public mind and there's not much to show for all the attention.

Any consideration of "restorative justice" also includes some serious goals, objectives, commitments, and results from offenders who hope to participate in second chance programs.
It's unlikely that any progress will be made by focusing exclusively on only one side of the issue.
If there should be no ramifications for convicted felons then it seems logical that the offense should not have bee a felony to begin with. What sense does it make to spend billions on a criminal justice systems that convicts, incarcerates, feeds, houses, schools and attempts to rehab felons if these politicians want no more differences in society between a felon and a law abiding citizen. Save us our billions in government waste, fire all teh worthless bureaucrats in the chain of events and just stop making all this stupid shit felonies. Why spend the money to come full circle?
