TKC EXCLUSIVE AND BREAKING NEWS!!! VACANT SPACE ABOUNDS ALONG THE KANSAS CITY TOY TRAIN STREETCAR LINE!!!

The Downtown toy train streetcar wasn't sold as transit but rather an "economic engine" that would transform this Kansas City corridor into a vibrant and bustling biz district. Sadly, despite all the hype that hasn't happened just yet.

Here's a recent example from our blog community . . .

"A virtually empty River Market office building that has not been converted into market rate apartments; what gives???"

This is the former location of a HUGE Kansas City based biz that apparently didn't see much future right along the streetcar route.

Additionally, there's a great deal of half-empty downtown spaces simply due to job market exodus in the early 2000s and the lasting impact of the Great Recession. Sadly, none of these facts will interrupt the ongoing celebration of a line that travels a measly 2.2 miles.

  1. Sly is selling the sizzle.

    Don't mess with the chef!

  2. Better title: Populous depopulates the streetcar.

  3. Also notice that the former location of Ingredient is still vacant. Not that ingredient was a good idea but it did offer something almost local and a healthy option for workers Downtown. I guess that was the problem, most of your Kansas City "denizens" just want something fast and easy and cheap. I'm surprised there's still not a mcdonald's downtown. They would probably do better than they did before.

  4. Downtown should be renamed to Katlantic City and all the gaudy Cordish shit being slapped up turned into interlinked casinos. Call the new hotel Burkes Palace.

  5. I'm no streetcar advocate, but Ingredient had bigger problems than this one. It was on the ropes, with or without the the Toy Train.

  6. Come May 6 this building will be fully leased for $6,000 per square foot. And the downtown hotel will be fully booked fr the next decade. Just wait and see. The streetcar will save us all!

  7. The Streetcar is just another way for the city and S'lie to spend money they don't have on things they don't need.

E-Tax passes and the FIRST thing you hear is that water rates are going up 3% and sewer rates going up 13% and will continue to rise 13% per year for at least the next several years.

This city has a MAJOR economic issue. It's bad enough businesses are leaving the city for the suburbs. But the city is also well on it's way to making it so that no one wants to live in KC proper due to getting taxed to death.

Spending is out of control and the city is using every excuse they can to raise taxes. Oh but we have money for the street car, for Burke's hotel castle, Shirley Helzberg and any other developer or local shaker with money that comes calling for tax incentives for a project.

This city is about is crooked as it comes. Just sit back and wait...Detroit II is coming.

  8. Cocaine distribution alleged against 18th and Vine restaurant owner

The owner of a restaurant in Kansas City’s 18th and Vine District has been charged with distributing large amounts of cocaine.

Paul Danny Gosserand, owner of Danny’s Big Easy, was indicted by a federal grand jury Thursday on charges of conspiracy to distribute cocaine and possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute.

Gosserand, 57, of Kansas City, Kan., was also charged with possessing two firearms as part of a drug trafficking crime.

  9. That building has waterless urinals. It was those, not the streetcar that drove away the tenants. Oh wait, the streetcar has waterless urinals too. Never mind.

  10. I GOT IT! We need lactation booths on the toy train. Mayor what is the name for your distant cousin's company that got a federal grant to make those things?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Can they be transgender lactation booths? That would be the sort of progressive thing that would move us ahead of Portland finally.

  12. Lol @ transgender lactating booths.

  13. That is one ugly building totally out of character with the neighborhood.

  14. Where are the jobs the streetcar supporters promised?

  15. 9:57 Totally agree as are most of the hideous new condo buildings. They have completely destroyed the unique heritage and character of the area and turned it into something no different than a suburban apartment complex except with more homeless folks by the front door. So look for another bailout in a few years.

Someone needs to step up with the new development proposed for the riverfront near Main street and preserve what's left of the original landing site. That's ONE thing that St. Louis has done MUCH better than KC.

  17. Given all the flavours of gender and queerdom. The city should just take the building and put 526 individual private restrooms inside. Charge 50 cents, guarantee privacy and you have the first Multi Sexual City Shitting Center.

  21. Yeah, we get it...Tony once upon a time had to retract some comments he made about some scumbag lawyer.

    Nobody fucking gives a shit.

I know you must think that your little guerrilla warfare campaign makes you a clever lad indeed, but give it a rest you jaggoff.

  22. Lot of brand new, salient and original thought here...

Meanwhile, residents of KC shake their heads and laugh at this group of 4chan rejects, you still lost, the streetcar is complete and under budget, new residents keep pouring into downtown...
And the hit count keeps falling.

  23. ^^^^^Lots of brand new, salient thought here, too. Enjoy your Kool Aid.

  24. That building is empty because people would rather live in their mom's basements like Tony Botello
