TKC BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS!!! CELEBRATE KANSAS CITY TOP 5 FALLACIES CONFRONTING SINGLE-TERMINAL AIRPORT!!!

Tragically, Kansas City mainstream media have crashed and burned when it comes to reporting the reality of a BILLION DOLLAR project under consideration at City Hall. Thankfully, our blog community offers an alternative perspective that local newsies have failed to recognize.

Check it:

LET'S CONSIDER THE TOP FIVE KANSAS CITY DELUSIONS REGARDING THE MCI SINGLE-TERMINAL SCHEME!!!

The ugly design isn't finalized, we're still talking about a blank check that's certainly going to go over budget but local leaders and the airlines aren't offering voters much of a choice.

Here's what we're working with . . .

TKC EXCLUSIVE: CONSULTANT EFFORT ALREADY UNDERWAY TO NAME THE NEW AIRPORT AFTER MAYOR SLY!!!

Insiders want to put a stop to this notion QUICKLY. In fact, given that Kansas City has yet to "name the puppy" is making this pricey proposal even harder to kill. But the consultant class thinks this is big of politico worship is a selling point.

Kansas City Crony Capitalist Usual Suspects Comprise Most Single-Terminal Support

All the familiar faces were in attendance yesterday . . . Burns & Mac, J.E. Dunn, HTNB along with the Greater KC Chamber who know this new airport scheme will be a feeding frenzy for the 1% more than anyone else.

Kansas City Will Back The Bonds And Airline Guarantees Are Worthless

In the final analysis, the talk of Southwest or any other airline putting up cash for this project out of their revenues could be voided by nothing less than a few keystrokes of an accountant. We'll have more on this later but the talk of the airlines on the MOU is not even close to a binding agreement and City Hall lawyers are a notorious local legal community punching bag who almost NEVER win a case . . . There's no way KCMO could ever enforce any agreement that's already flimsy at best.

Councilman Jermaine Reed Thinks The New Airport Will Create 3rd District Jobs

Big construction projects have NEVER created prosperity for urban core residents. From the stadium renovation to just about every structure in the Downtown Renaissance, urban core companies have been left out in the cold. Kansas City has consistently had trouble enforcing MBE/WBE participation numbers and given the distant proximity of the airport to the 3rd District . . . This councilman is clearly out of his depth when he talks about the new airport as an economic driver in his district.

$2 Parking Increase Will Pay For New Kansas City Single-Terminal Airport??? WTF?!?

This is the punchline and something that any adult should be able to easily discount. The airlines say this new airport won't significantly increase ticket prices and City Hall claims that the cash won't come from taxpayer resources . . . So, who is paying for it all?!?!

IN A CYNICAL, SHAMELESS AND DESPICABLE ARGUMENT, THE AIRLINES AND MAYOR SLY'S TEAM CLAIM THAT A $2 PARKING INCREASE WILL HELP COVER THE COSTS OF A NEW SINGLE-TERMINAL BILLION DOLLAR AIRPORT!!!

To be fair, there is also mention of ticket fees, concession revenue and airport leasing as a potential money maker . . . All of which aren't currently a profit center for the old airport. Tragically, the only thing all of these dweebs will admit is that parking will be more expensive in the totally inconvenient new airport. And let's not even get started on the constant lie from City Hall about taxpayer funds transferred from the airport which has been proven time and time again to be nothing but a lie.

Like it or not, none of the math works out on this EPIC project that has the potential to quickly fly off the radar and incurs skyrocketing expenses for Kansas City.

Developing . . .

  1. This is the final nail in Kansas City's coffin. This is the deal that will bankrupt this city for generations.

But I have to disagree with you on one point TKC.

We should name the airport after Mayor Sly James. It would be a fitting tribute to have this disaster named for the man who started it all but won't be anywhere in sight when it comes time to pay the bills.

  8. World's Least Interesting Man sez...

I don't often seek analysis of the airline industry or the incredibly complicated world o airport maintenance and finance, but when I do, I turn to a blog for 30-something white suburban man children, reposting half-truths, misunderstandings and outright lies fed to them by a small cadre of equally unqualified rich old white men with too much free time, bad 80's era economic theories, a hatred for the city the live, and absolutely no background or expertise in the subject matter at hand.

    Stay Stupid, my friends.

  9. Well there Mr. Condecending. How about the idea that the folks with no expertise do have experience in being conned and lied to in this town and we have seen how these shit heels in local government waste money and have clearly demonstrated a complete lack of fiscal responsibility in was manner that would have folks thinking it is policy in this town.

I suggest instead of having a race to see how much can be spent and raised, perhaps the planners should have a budget of $500,000 or less with the strict requirement that the airport must pay for itself based on its collective revenue (and non other) without raising the prices of a bag of potato chips to 18 dollars or forcing families to take out a second mortgage to park and pick up dad. Expert or not the idea that a community should go into a deep hole, for the sake of a few airplanes, makes no more sense than building a cathedral around the Greyhound bus terminal. The airport has a function. Stick to that basic function and get out of the business of playing like it is Beverly Hills out there in the prairie.

  12. For uninformed 10:57am:
Actually, the Atlanta airport, which serves a real major city and is in fact an international airport, is named after Maynard Jackson, the black former mayor of that city.
Piddly parochial KC comes in a very long distance behind ATL.

  15. Will somebody tell Teresa Loar and her constituents in Republican Sam Graves territory that the rest of us progressives in Kansas City want a brand new modern airport and not an antiquated reworked cattle chute . We want KC to go proudly into the 21st Century and not remain mired down in our Cowtown past. That stinking hell hole of an airport is totally inefficient and an eyesore. Happy 1976!

  16. Ah yes, the consultants were finally able to twist the arms of the airlines and get them to agree to build a new fancy airport mall. In spite of all the arguments touted about security, baggage, de-icing, airport operations as being the reasons for the need for a new terminal, its really all about the amenities, the financial windfall for the construction companies and consultants, all of that sales tax revenue from the retail and dining operations, and local political and civic leaders being able to have their signature accomplishment to show off and to be able to proclaim Kansas City as being a world class city due to its fancy new airport mall. And we all know how critical it is to flying to be able to shop and have a great shopping and dining experience at the airport, since we are all going to want to spend hours there having the time of our lives while waiting to catch a flight. Forget about those ticket price increases and the increase in the cost of everything at the airport, because cost means nothing to the flying public. We consumers will gladly hand over fistfulls of additional dollars to be able to be just as inconvenienced as any other passenger in the U.S., just as long as we get to be inconvenienced in a luxurious and classy terminal. Yes, now we can finally be just like every other airport in this country. I am so looking forward to going to the new air mall with my family in tow as we stand in line for an hour or two waiting to get through security, walk 15 minutes to our gate, then go spend a paycheck buying some refreshments and a snack for them while we wait for our flight. And lets not forget the 40% increase in passenger traffic within 20 years and the huge increase in flights that is the house of cards financial model being used to justify the new terminal and support the lie that taxpayers will not have to put a dime into paying for the air mall. Its a wonderful dream come true for all of us

  17. Teresa is "weary" of your opinions, because they get in the way of her travel allowance, her new leopard print #readyforher jacket, her ability to award contracts to cronies, her chance to lie to the fire Union about how much she supports them then try to sell them out for votes on her airport "plan", and her ability to get another no-show job to after she leaves the council again.

It's exhausting being such a strong woman!

  21. All bow to Lyin' Sly James

Mayor Sly James’ Statement on KCI Single Terminal Proposal

    April 26, 2016 - KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI

“Today’s presentation is based on more than two years of thoughtful analysis and good-faith negotiations with the airlines, combined with a year of intense evaluation and consideration by a citizen-led advisory group. Through that process, we’ve learned that KCI is a forty-year-old city facility that does not meet the needs of today’s airlines or travelers.

Efforts to renovate KCI would be more expensive than building a new single terminal and would still fail to meet our needs for today and for the future. A new single terminal would help ensure the airlines are able to provide the kind of service travelers expect today, as well as the convenience they like. We don’t have to choose between these two options; we really can have both. Furthermore, our taxpayers won’t be covering the costs of a new terminal.

However, we are at a critical decision point. If we miss this moment, then the opportunity will be gone for years and KCI will continue to fall behind other cities. A single terminal is inevitable – the question is when. If you think something is inevitable, do it now.”
