Public schools in Kansas are in the gutter but there's a dearth of perspectives that don't fall along partisan lines.
Thankfully, DENIZENS OF OUR KICK-ASS TKC BLOG COMMUNITY step in to provide real economic solutions where only red vs. blue bickering exists.
Take a peek . . .
Steve Rose... School funding cutbacks
"Interesting and predictably enough not once in his rant does the politically connected wannabe Big Steve Rose allow for the possibility that the school system is taking up too much money and overpaying administrators, principals, teachers and school czars. Maybe a part of a rational solution would be to trim the pay of everyone (so everyone can stay employed) and discard and replace wasteful or unproductive work rules . . ."
You decide . . .

ReplyDeleteRose is such an asshole.
ReplyDeleteSteve Rose is not "politically connected".
ReplyDeleteHe's a legend in his own mind and someone who perfectly exemplifies being born with a silver foot in his mouth and whose terrible business decisions destroyed the business his dad worked decades to build and then gave him.
But Steve has done well for himself and the Star makes believe he's an actual columnist who has insights and serious views of Johnson County, which again only goes to show how little the Star knows about that part of the metro.
Nothing much is going to change.
School funding is a big deal. There are two sides to the story and the Star has not provided any meaningful response to those who say the districts are already receiving enough funds. The Kansas Policy Institute has a lot of numbers on its website that suggest that school funding is not shrinking. Which side is telling to real story? Right-wing zealots that want to shut down public schools or left-wing liberal teachers that are over-paid and unable to manage a budget?
ReplyDeleteReal journalism would look at the numbers and provide an unbiased analysis for readers to understand the issue. If the sky isn't falling, the rhetoric, not the actual funding and test results, is doing more to ruin the reputation of Kansas schools.
There is a ton of misinformation being passed around and between the KC STAR Assholes and the School Lawyers so much of it that is reported is incorrect.
ReplyDeleteFIRST - Everyone is in favor of great schools for their children and all children.
SECOND - School Administrators are overpaid.
THIRD - Teachers need more resources and in their minds enough is not enough.
Fourth - School Districts have enough money to file lawsuits but not enough to run schools???? Stop spending money on Lawyers.
FIFTH - Get the Supreme Court out of education.
We already pay idiots to fuck up the school system. Adding Rose the the list of experts is not only a slap in the face to citizens, but Dan the hero horse thinks Rose is full of shit too.
ReplyDeleteWhen you think teachers are overpaid and believe what the KPI tells you then you have no legitimacy. Who else is overpaid? Chinese kids working in Nike sweatshops? Sorry but getting all of your information from Dave Talbert and ALEC is like believing Baghdad Bob.
ReplyDeleteThe idea that teachers/administrators are overpaid, is hilarious. median teacher income for metro districts are either equal to or less than median income for the KC metro area. An administrator making high 5-figure to low 6-figures is again, not "too high". These are incredibly qualified people tasked with managing large amounts of human and financial capital.
ReplyDeleteNothing brings out the haters like salary talks. Don't be mad at them, be mad at yourself for not being good anything
11:24 shut up hating ass hole
ReplyDeleteNote to Anon 829AM... note I wrote politically connected wannabe. I agree most of what Steve Rose is resides in his own mind.
ReplyDeleteIs this the DENIZENS with real economic solutions? ^^^^^
ReplyDeleteSure thing Paco.
What color is the sky in your alternate reality?
11:19 - My first reaction is to say YES to more school funding. I want the best public schools and am willing to pay a premium for the best teachers and resources. I'm also for responsible spending and want to make sure the school districts are not going to mismanage taxpayer money. Instead of dismissing KPI and Trabert, those advocating for more money need to challenge the KPI's numbers instead of his character.
ReplyDeleteI looked at the KPI website for the first time several weeks ago and there is some compelling information that suggests schools have continually received more money year-over-year. Maybe his math is bogus. If so, explain why.
That's the problem, you're looking at the KPI website that references only Trabert, Arthur Laffer, and AlEC. They are cherry-picking their data as a means to their end. They aren't using any independent data.
ReplyDeleteAny of you blog cognoscenti happen to know how much Johnson County spend PER STUDENT to educate the children?
ReplyDeleteHow civilized countries do it: 1) National expectations. 2) Two tiers: one for 10% smart kids, one to make sure the 90% learns a trade. 3) Admit we are not all equal. Everyone goes to one school for 8 years then separate gifted kids from the AHEM koffkoff, normals. 4) Never met a kid so dumb he only speaks 2 languages! 4) Keep religion at home. No head bags for girls, no crosses for boys. Keep that garbage home.
