Once again City Hall publicity and hype leave Kansas City disappointed as cruel reality offers very little hope of changing desperate circumstances within the urban core.
In the coming days, a program offering local dilapidated houses for $1 comes to an end.
About the effort:
"The city and the Land Bank of Kansas City have offered 130 derelict, generally unlivable structures for sale for $1 each to those willing to make them livable again within a year. The buyer's reward is an eventual $8,500 rebate — the amount it would have cost the city to flatten the houses.
Since launching the program in February, the Land Bank has taken in about 60 applications and fielded roughly 4,000 inquiries. Applications are due April 1, and a Land Bank panel will decide who gets the houses."
Here's the rub and the complaint from those who know better than TKC . . .

Sadly, social media and newsies who don't really know a lot about Kansas City's diverse communities delivered the enthusiastic message without much context. The reality is: This smoke and mirrors effort represents nothing more than hype dedicated to pushing more taxes on Kansas City and the handful of houses that will be pawned off on suckers don't really improve so much local economic disparity which exists.

You could buy most of these houses for a dollar and watch as every improvement you tried to make was ripped apart and stolen as fast as you spent the money.
ReplyDeleteNo one is going to "invest" any private money on the east side until the levels of crime, violence, and homicides are greatly reduced and that's going to take some leadership in the black community, of which there is virtually none now.
There's a reason there are "food deserts", thousands of derelict abandoned residential and commercial properties, and hundreds of residents fleeing east KCMO every year.
And it's NOT because of no wi-fi!
6:21 pm gets it. These "houses" are in violent areas with a group of people dedicated to keeping them derelict and violent. If the Land Bank had been able to make money on the deal, they'd have sold these places long ago. It's a scam, and possibly a death trap. Stay away!

Once upon a time, there stood a grand house on a large, well-manicured city lot.
The owners, a married couple with several children in public schools, worked full-time to support their family and raise the children. They worked hard and lived within their means, because that was the American standard. They had an extended family/friends network which worked in unison to make sure no one got left behind. Absent a tragedy, they would go a lifetime without seeking government assistance beyond programs like the GI Bill, Social Security, etc.
They attended PTA meetings, Parent/Teacher school open houses, and their children's music/plays/sports activities. Children were taught to respect their elders, teachers, police officers, and each other. In other words, they were responsible parents.
Many families were part of a faith community as that was oftentimes integral to their religious, ethnic, and community foundation.
Today, the house (as pictured above) sits abandoned and forgotten. It's value has been reduced to a single dollar, with no assurance of a buyer. The city has been mismanaged by a string of short-sighted Big Government Democratic opportunists who constantly seek tax increases for "Keeping Up With The Jones'" pet projects while basic infrastructure slowly rots to ruin.
The school district, essentially seized in a 1985 Liberal court coup d'etat, received approximately $2 billion taxpayer dollars over a 12-year period to construct a Liberal Democrat interventionist's interpretation of educational equality. The district spent as much as $11,700 per pupil--more money per pupil, on a cost of living adjusted basis, than any other of the 280 largest districts in the country. The money bought higher teachers' salaries, 15 new schools, and such amenities as an Olympic-sized swimming pool with an underwater viewing room, television and animation studios, a robotics lab, a 25-acre wildlife sanctuary, a zoo, a model United Nations with simultaneous translation capability, and field trips to Mexico and Senegal. The student-teacher ratio was 12 or 13 to 1, the lowest of any major school district in the country.
The results were dismal. Test scores did not rise; the black-white gap did not diminish; and there was less, not greater, integration.
When Sylvester James and the usual suspects tell you that the sky will fall if the KCMO Earnings Tax is not renewed...."Brother Can You Spare Another Dollar?"....please take a look at the house pictured above and understand that this is the result of their policies and management.
