A new plan from Kansas City's most prolific transit activist jumps aboard the bandwagon of a new airport . . . Like it or not, he's offering more detail in his designs than other City Hall supporters of the controversial airport plan.
Chastain calls to integrate new light rail system into new single-terminal airport
If ever the time was right to build a new citywide and rapid light rail train system (to connect a new single-terminal airport to Twin Creeks, downtown, Union Station, the Plaza, Brookside, Royals & Chiefs Stadiums, and destinations beyond), it is upon us, and would shine down upon the city these benefits:
* Save Kansas City taxpayers $200 million in not having to scab light rail into the 3-terminal airport configuration
the city has now.
* Add a new (wow) convenience factor to the new single-terminal concept in that passengers could be whisked away (on a gleaming fast train) from our new state-of-the-art airport to downtown in 30 minutes, as well as other major destinations beyond without having to de board the train to make a transfer.
* Provide the people quiet, zero-emission rail / electric bus-based transit components that can get people to jobs and major destinations across the city without it taking 3 hours and 3 buses to get there.
* Provide Kansas City a state-of-the-art public transportation system that will dual as a major selling point in attracting back to the city...not only new job, business, population, and economic growth, but new conventions and visitors as well.
* Secure for Kansas City $750 million from the FTA's Rail Starts Program (Phoenix secured $1.0 billion for their light rail system) to help build Kansas City's new gem of transportation infrastructure.
Conclusion: No one can doubt the melding of these two powerful infrastructure improvement projects would catapult Kansas City forward and bring much needed jobs, growth, and prosperity to the city

ReplyDeleteNot a fan of Clay but in this case it actually makes sense. St. Louis has a light rail which can take people from the airport to midtown, downtown STL, and even across the river to Illinois and it actually works.

ReplyDelete8:54 makes an excellent point. Light rail would kill their ability to maintain the current airport let alone a new one. And what benefit is there to a 30 minute rail ride downtown when I can drive there in 20 now and go all the way to my destination?

ReplyDeleteIf we were to build a dedicated rail from Kansas City to the airport, it would still have to stop at various locations along the way. Even the billions spent to bring Chicago's L Train to O'Hare and Midway Airports still stop many times along the way at various L Stops.

ReplyDeleteAt one time I supported Chastain's efforts just because he was willing to buck the bastards in government. I looked into his residency and proved to my satisfaction that he is NOT A KANSAS CITY RESIDENT. This lie about his residency turned me against him, but it showed how easy it is to lie about where you live to allow you to run for office. How many other city officials have fake residencies?
