This afternoon the Kansas City No Violence Alliance held an "uneventful" press conference amid a local homicide spike of more than 30% and counting.
And here is the question nobody is asking...
WHAT HAPPENS IF KANSAS CITY HOMICIDES GET WORSE AND NOT BETTER???
Amid this year's carnage we have seen silence from the local political class and then an attempt to blame shift against gun laws and the Missouri GOP... Today, they're talking about staying the course and continuing "community engagement" tactics. Meanwhile, murder counts are rising across the nation along with a number of innocent kids killed in KCMO.

ReplyDeleteI'd rather them try and have some small successes than collectively give up like other cities have. One thing a lot of people don't realize is that Nova partners provide resources such as job, educational and support services like substance abuse and anger management to people involved in crime. Hundreds of people are involved in the program and staying out of trouble. Those who decline services and choose to continue in their life of crime are subject to increased enforcement and prosecution on all levels.
ReplyDeleteI agree that more could be done but you can lead a horse to water but can't make him drink. The people involved in bettering their lives are taking a step to do better. Without initiatives like nova they would likely continue in their ways and the homicide count could be higher and incarnation levels would be higher in the area.
Just saying I'd rather them try than do nothing to help the problem.

ReplyDeleteThe problem in our society is that people aren't taught how to manage basic conflict in their lives. When people are shooting, stabbing and beating others over arguments over property, Facebook and other things that is a major issue. You can blame drugs, alcohol or guns but the real guilt lies with our failure to properly educate people in basic problem solving.

There aren't even a hundred, much less "hundreds" of people who have somehow found jobs, left the street life, and turned their lives around.
Try to think it through: You're on the street with your gang, "earning" pretty good tax-free money in drugs, prostitution, and who knows what else, and your offered an $8/hour job in a Lenexa warehouse if you promise to stop being a bad guy. What do your buds think about you leaving and talking to the cops and others about who knows what?
KCMO is back to having fully one-third the number of homicides annually as New York, with a population over 16 times as large.
As long as destructive behavior is endless excused and blame is placed on everyone but the perpetrators, this can only get worse.
And it has.
When you have endless marches, demands, and even arson and vandalism as part of "the movement" of the day, what are people supposed to be learning about civilly settling their differences.

Who spends enough time on issues to learn enough to be able to make intelligent policy proposals or recommendations?
Encouraging a lack of social skills and activities in conflict resolution is the major strategy of most of the leaders and groups.
Everyone is aware of the problem, and it's not going to be solved by someone else.
One thing about it, the poverty pimps stay in a specific territory. There's nobody on this panel from Independence, Raytown, Blue Springs, Lees Summit, Platte City, Parkville, Gladstone, etc. Murders happen all over the metro but in Kansas City there is a raced-based pattern of action and Black people are always under attack, either by groups like this who claim to help or by the incidence of black on black crime, violence, rape, robbery, hatred, etc. The poverty pimps never step outside of the Kansas City boundaries despite increasing crime all over the metro. End poverty pimpage now!

After all the toys are bought and paid for with public cash, KCPD still can't deliver. You are correct, the fact that KCNova exists to fight crime proves that KCPD has failed. Voters should remember that when it comes time to renew the tax.
