TKC Sunday Advice: Don't Be A 'Basic B*tch' During World Series 2015!!! Move Beyond Corporate Offerings And Instead Choose Authentic Kansas City Indie Coffee Shops, Restaurants, Vintage Stores And Dive Bars!!!

We always try to keep it light for Sunday afternoon so here's an upbeat missive that still offers a desperately needed fact check to so much World Series hype that will inundate this town over the next week.

Here's the point . . .

DON'T BUY THE HYPE OR GENERIC FARE FROM THE DWEEBS @ VISIT KC!!!

MOVE BEYOND THE P&L DISTRICT AND TRY TO SEE THE REAL KANSAS CITY!!!

Kelly's Bar in Westport doesn't really count but it's a start in the right direction.

For those visiting from New York or entertaining guests there's a temptation to play it safe and party with all the dweebs at the Downtown Entertainment district that's still losing money for City Hall but remains packed with "basic bitches" and some of the least interesting people in Kansas City.

Instead, we encourage both locals and World Series visitors to move beyond their comfort zones in order to get a REAL sense of this town.

The next few days will see a media blitz of clickbait lists and instead of going this route we'd like to show just a few choices that should direct tourists away from "basic" offerings.

Because all of this talk starts with BBQ . . .

Choose Rosedale over the more camera friendly Joe's BBQ - Don't pat yourself on the back for trying Arthur Bryant's on the East Side . . . Gates is a much more authentic choice.

Starbucks is great but they're great everywhere . . . Most of the coffee options are regional but Broadway Cafe is probably the most authentic Kansas City java joint. The junkies who hang out front are always good for a laugh. No, they don't have wifi so you'll actually be forced to talk with friends. Quay Coffee is the local newbie on the block and they're nice but a tad too fancy for our tastes. Be advised, getting into this discussion will cause locals to pull Aixois out of their booty but it's time to take a stand and tell people the Crestwood is not Kansas City . . . It's simply a JoCo satellite.

Final KCMO coffee talking point: YJ's is great but doesn't get interesting until after 11:30 PM.

Kansas City vintage culture is thriving . . . River Market Antiques is at the center of the movement and just about everything on the West Bottoms is a much more fun adventure then a trip to a shopping mall or the obligatory visit to the fading County Club Plaza . . . Instead, pick 39th Street and dodge cars moving way too fast in a residential area like everybody else in this town.

Finally, for a nightcap, Martini Corner is a much more appropriate KC watering hole than most any other night spot . . . Yes, the neighborhood can be sketchy but New Yorkers are accustomed to a bit of danger.

Of course none of these places are paying TKC for the recommendation (and we have never sold our opinion) but watching local news it's clear to see that sponsored content will be most of the MSM content for the next week and half . . . The Pitch is fun but it's sad to see that most of their blog offerings are just consumer updates. But even on Sunday we don't want to digress into the downward spiral of dead tree media and how they're now irrelevant in this discussion . . .

One last digression . . .

Yes, it's appropriate to debate the merits of visiting 18th & Vine vs. personal safety vs. feigned interest in jazz . . .

As always, we simply want to provide better alternatives and some independent thinking when it comes to authentic local offerings vs. all of the generic and corporate places that don't represent the REAL Kansas City.

You decide and feel free to leave any suggestions . . .

Comments

  1. A few giggle lines in here TKC. I'm glad to see you're going to try to have fun with this. Let the tolls leave comments, you've got bigger fish to fry this week. You know Sly is going to push that hotel this week against the voters.

  2. New York visitors to KC will be minimal. This world series is for the small time rubes.

  3. How can the Kansas City Atheist Coalition cash in on this?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Don't forget The Strand Theatre, great place to meet new friends.

  5. Avoid our local skid row basement bloggers advice and you'll be fine New Yorkers.

  6. ^^^^
Or sniff TKC farts all day with this guy who loves this blog every day and twice on Sunday.

  7. Of course this is silly. NYC hipsters, if any make the trip, are not going to take advice from Mr. Wannabe. But one comment caught my eye - how can you claim that Gates is more authentic KC (whatever that means) than Bryant's?

  8. Kansas City is home to basic bitches, that's why they chose KC. Nothing but D-list, Kim Kardashian types from KC.

    ReplyDelete
  9. The only safe place in this town anymore is on the runway at KCI about to get the hell out of here headed towards Alaska.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Just a few good choices here, generally I agree that P&L is a waste of time BUT I don't think many New Yorkers will make the trip. Why not just wait for the Mets to take it back and watch them win it all there.

What will be more fun is to sit back and hear KC folks bitch about NY and the rudeness they get from the big apple.

  11. Gates and Bryant's are both shite. Jack Stack or nothing. It's about time we separate the deadbeats from people who appreciate and can afford a good meal.

    1. Nope, Jack's is good, but there's better ribs and ends at ROSCOE'S in west Dotte (K32 & 98th Street). Also, in west Dotte (86th & State Avenue, a few miles straight East of Kansas Speedway/Hollywood Casino) is WYNDOT BBQ where the whole menu rocks.

  12. Note to anyone outside Kansas City who stumbled across this blog:

We're mostly interested in bashing niggers and spics and glorifying the supremacy of the white race here. Get fucking lost.

  13. ^^^^^^
Nope, that's just the shitty white man who lost all of his money and just trolls this blog for kicks. We beat his ass on the regular. And keep on racking up huge hits while he cries in his shitty house.

This is the only news source in kc that matters. So much so that it drives all the old white shits crazy.

Don't get ahead of yourself there camper. I just read this blog for the tits.

  15. Visit KC?

No thanks. I think I'll just watch it on TV.

  16. Yeah word is next time the Polar Bear is sitting two stools down from you at Rosedale, don't turn your back. 2pm is not a good time for you to go there TKC.

Just a friendly word of advice.

    Word !

  17. Yeah right. NaziBear isn't going to blow his anonymous cover ...

Once when leaving New York, I noticed a large sign right at the entrance to the tunnel that said, "When you leave New York, you're not going anywhere."

  18. Really Byron? Thought you were blind. Liar, liar ,liar. You need to keep stories straight cocksucker.
( Remember when you told us that story?) Daddy, no...

    ReplyDelete
  19. I recommend Sidekicks for your evening libations. Byron and I often meet there, suck down a couple of long neck buds. Afterwards if we have time we even grab a beer to wash the taste out of our mouths.

  20. SOOO...Is TKC getting a few gift cards for free meals and swag for plugs?

YJ's & Broadway Cafe are great if you're a hipster-wannabe-poseur and haven't bathed in a month or so.

Martini Corner has been a loser since the Velvet Dog split.

Also...Aixios is good. BUT for killer...try Le Fou Frog. Chef Mano is batshit crazy -- but awesome.

And you've neglected anything of interest for the LGBTQRSTLMNOP visitors, but then, I don't give a fuck.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Wildman, nobody wanted your shitty gift cards. Don't show us that you are a such a loser. Have a little dignity.

As for the places, Tony's list is better than your pretentious and lame favorites.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Nobody from out of town is going to read this gutter blog. This blog is the internet equivalent of a landfill.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Fuck you Tony! I'm eating at Burger King before that ass hole Sly drives the cost of a Whopper up to $12.99.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Just remember out of towners, if there is anything you don't like , it's because of the TOY TRAIN! If it wasn't for the TOY TRAIN we could have had anything you ever wanted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
