TKC BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS!!! PETITIONERS AGAINST DOWNTOWN CONVENTION HOTEL DEAL CONFRONT KANSAS CITY MAYOR SLY AND COUNCIL OVER CONFLICTS OF INTEREST!!!

This week there's a showdown which pits DIRECT DEMOCRACY against a controversial downtown convention hotel deal pushed forward by Mayor Sly James.

We've offered a look at the legislation Mayor Sly is pushing forward and it's one of the most despicable acts to thwart the city's charter that any local politico as ever undertaken. Tragically, so far no other MSM outlet has reported on the effort to crackdown on Kansas City voters.

Accordingly . . .

PETITIONERS STANDING AGAINST MAYOR SLY CALL OUT CONFLICTS OF INTEREST AGAINST UPCOMING LEGISLATION AIMED AT SUBVERTING THEIR EFFORTS!!!

Check the latest statement that clearly calls out Mayor Sly James working against the will of thousands of voters on behalf of a hotel deal that is shaky at best.

Committee to Discuss viability of Downtown Hotel Petition

To: Kansas City Council Members, Citizens for Responsible Government and Voting Friends (4000 of which signed the downtown hotel petitions).

Tomorrow at 1pm, 10th floor of City Hall, the Ethics and Legal Review Committee will meet to discuss the future of the voter’s downtown hotel petition.

This committee hearing appears to be a sham. The Ordinance 150906 is sponsored by the mayor and it is his attempt to quash the voters initiative petition. It is common knowledge the mayor is a close personal friend of the lead developer. The committee chair is also a close personal friend of the lead developer and has talked about his relationship in public. Both the mayor and the committee chair should recuse themselves from this meeting due to conflicts of interests. How are you betting?

Ordinance 150906 itself is a sham and was obviously rushed through. The legal cases sited in the ordinance have no bearing on the voters petition, nor is there any attempt on the part of the voters to change State TIF laws. Both arguments are bogus and legally flawed. Also the city itself has limited assistance for construction of any future downtown convention hotels for 10 years in the contract it has initiated with the developer.

There are at least 7 (7) lawyers on the city council. We hope some of them will take the time to review the case law sited in the mayor’s ordinance and see the errors in ordinance 150906 and set it aside as flawed. No one in their right mind would want their name on this document.

This will be a telling week for our city council. It will be important to note how the vote goes on the taxpayers petition on the downtown hotel both at the committee level and if they rush it through on Thursday at the city council meeting. These votes along with the vote on the crossroads TIF will dictate the future of Kansas City. We encourage the council members to fulfill the pledges they made to their constituents at election time.

  1. Sly should really be careful on this one. Why does he want this so bad when it's clear that so many people are against it?

  4. The previous council had a history of going against the will of the voters. If this council follows suit it should be noted that we the people can have our say when the earnings tax renewal comes up. Ignore us at your peril council/mayor.

  5. Part of the reason KC lost the RNC was lack of hotel space. The convention hotel would go a long way to bringing more events and people to the downtown area.

  7. 10:30am First sentence is incorrect. Even RNC has acknowledged this was not the reason we lost the convention.

  8. And what do we do with the publicly funded hotel once that 4-Day Convention freakshow leaves town?

  9. this the petition we filled up with bogus signatures like Dindu Nuffins and Billy Reubens?

    (yes, lol)

  10. wrong. The petition was certified by the City Clerk. The signatures are valid and kcmo voters that the mayor is slapping in the face.

  11. 12:15 they will expand Bartle that is much too small, extend the streetcar line to the Jazz District, build a new arena to replace an obviously outdated Sprint Center and expand the Power & White District. Once that fails they will commission a new study to find out how we compete with Des Moines and Louisville.

  12. If electeds in KCMO and Jackson County weren't allowed to vote on proposals because of conflicts of interest, you'd be unlikely to ever even get a quorum.
It's and insider's game with the amateur political class celebrating their D-list celebrity, soliciting campaign contributions, looking for their next public office or job, or trolling for a post-term job with some local company or nonprofit they've helped.
Just review the visitors' logs on the 22nd and 29th floors of city hall and take a look at campaign contributions.
Low voter turnout, little interest in what actually goes on on these governing bodies, and low information voters who are regularly wowed by the latest grandiose claim or announcement.
    And distractions; plenty of distractions.
    How about them Royals!

    EXCELLENT POINT!!

But, if you're holding your breath on LAW PROFESSOR Quinton Lucas saying/acting so much as a word against the Mayor Sly Agenda, I fear for your life.
