Sadly, no mention of dozens of similar attempts to encourage tourism in and around 3rd District Kansas City which almost completely forget about security or the consumer meccas across the State Line and Northland bridges.
What the newspaper is missing is that attempting to recreate a hipster economy is a sketchy proposition at best . . . Also, let's not forget that a great deal of crossroads biz is subsidized by taxpayers, corporations and rich parents.
What's really tragic here is that these communities, like every other area outside of the downtown loop, are asking for basic infrastructure, better services and more police . . . Not art.
Moreover . . .
Like it or not, the arts scene is on the move WEST where gentrification is rampant all along Southwest Blvd and quickly turning the place from an array of burrito stands into an amalgamation of fly-by-night art galleries, design firms and poorly designed post-modern dwellings.
But fear not . . .
The free market has a way of figuring this stuff out whilst politicos, pundits and the newspaper compromised by a $20 MIL tax break continues to play developer with taxpayer cash earning typically horrible results.
You decide . . .
In some respects its already happening. But your headline misses one important part of the equation. We aren't talking about the art scene, we're talking about subsidy and City Hall thinking that they can fix a community by way of a few art grants and more tax breaks.

And it may take that -- Most likely AFTER the City has shoveled millions into the black hole of the "Jazz District." Let the private sector -- the market -- decide.

None of it works. What needs to happen to change the dynamic is a change in culture mostly by the folks who live East of Troost. The build it and they will come days are over.
I can see a trail of naive, bloody and beaten tourists slowly making their way back to the hotels on the Plaza. Now that's real art the planner/developers can be proud of. Of course they'll need to make some of the art out of metal for the scrap metal thieves.

If hipsters wanted to move East of Troost they would have done it long ago. Hipsters have a culture too and it mostly clashes with what is happening East of Troost.
