  3. When you read the Probable Cause Statement in this case, you are absolutely convinced that there is a LOT of evidence that this woman is guilty of ...running a nail salon. And, maybe she is clumsy with the flammable materials that are ALWAYS present in nail salons.

Not much else, except for "expert" opinions by the ATF. Pardon me, but since we are in the middle of a scandal in which thousands of cases are being reviewed because of FAULTY FBI expert testimony on hair (oh, and bite marks) I am a bit skeptical of VooDoo experts..

Problem is that like the guy with a hammer sees everything as a nail, law enforcement experts seldom come back with a "beats me" opinion. Especially in high-profile cases, there is pressure to provide a response other than, "I guess we'll never know". Even though a terrible fire really does leave little actual evidence.

Not long ago, Texas executed a guy for a killing that -- 12 years after the fire -- every scientist agreed was not actually arson. The local fire marshal had said it was. He was the Texas "expert".

But it is great publicity -- and that is what often drives federal law enforcement. Remember, they are content to let 6-8 guys rot in prison over the blast that killed 6 firefighters -- guys who had no more to do with it than J. Edgar Hoover did rather than admit that they screwed up.
