DISASTER!!! KANSAS CITY STREETCAR AUTHORITY 'NO BID' DESIGNATION COULD DOOM THE LONG DELAYED TOY TRAIN!!!

Bad news for streetcar cheerleaders and a wonderful realization that starting a project without voter support only puts a public project on track to destruction.

To wit . . .

NO-BID TOY TRAIN STREETCAR MANAGEMENT MIGHT DERAIL THE FUTURE OF THE DOWNTOWN KANSAS CITY TOY TRAIN STREETCAR!!!

Choo-choo fanboys will dispute this BUT the reality here is that streetcar authority is a main component of the despicable TDD scheme used to skirt around voters in order to pass this monstrosity without a citywide vote.

Checkit:

KC Biz Journal: Streetcar Authority at 'risk of conflicting with federal regulations'

And here's the money line:

"On Thursday morning, the city auditor's office published a report which said the FTA considers the streetcar authority — a nonprofit body charged with managing the day-to-day operations of the 2.2-mile Kansas City downtown streetcar line — a "no-bid, third-party contractor" that could impact the city's ability to receive grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation agency."

In other words, the toy train is going nowhere and the rigged, despicable manner in which it was devised has now doomed the long delayed project.

  3. Keep in mind that the entire project was devised based upon how to qualify for federal grants. Rather than expand the proven, successful, and cheaper MAX bus system, PIAC funds were pilfered to conduct studies and provide data to the federal government deeming this project worthy of Anthony Foxx's guidelines. Streetcar might not be what Kansas City wants, but it's what Washington DC wants, and "if we don't spend over $100M to get a $20M grant, DC will just spend that money in some other city!"

  8. "DOOM and the TOY TRAIN"

    Oh my God!

Bad news from Tony on the (he,he,he) TOY TRAIN!

Side note, isn't that the most cleaver thing you have ever heard?

I'm am just amazed, however, how Tony is working so hard on objective reporting.

Wait, Tony did not do any reporting.

He just liked to a Business Journal article with snarky commentary. I'm thinking, it took him 3 minutes to assemble that.

Come to think about it, that's all these blog posts consist of.

    What a loser.

Revenue? How can something that is free generate revenue? Did Russy boy tell the feds it wouldn't generate revenue when he applied for the grant?

  15. The street car is doomed because it may be ineligible for federal funding they currently have no intention of using?

  16. Actually if you read the audit you realize it's a stupid easy fix and the KCBJ left part of the sentence out that shows this.

Advertising and sponsorship money can't be used for operations.
So the authority just makes a separate accounting entry for this money and makes sure it only goes to pay down the construction bonds.

There, everything is fixed with proper money accounting.

The sky isn't falling if you don't jump to conclusions.
