KCMO Country Club Plaza Zoning Slap Fight

Get into the high flying world of real estate development and zoning rules & regs with the Pitch this week and the latest instance of middle-class lawyers losing debates about city codes to their higher paid, better dressed corporate counterpart . . . In fairness, this is a nice bit of journalism proving that white people with money are also helping to ruin the Plaza: Highwoods isn't bowled over by the Kansas City Plan Commission's vision for the future

  1. Steve Vockrodt is in a class of his own. The only guy left who isn't faking it, actually knows what he is doing, and doesn't waste peoples time with lowest common denominator crap.

  3. Neither Highwoods nor the City know how to manage a unique architectural heritage. Highwoods has already reduced the quality of the Plaza because it has no vision of the past or of the future other than profitability. Highwoods has no vision of distinction of place. The City is run by low rent bureaucrats and no vision politic thieves who pander to the highest bidder. Neither knows nor understand heritage or architecture beyond what they believe to be "affordable", based on their low salaries. Look at the loss of our parks and public amenities. If it doesn't come cheap and in a box, they won't buy it!
The Nichols were not soft, sentimental lover's of quaint buildings. They were tough business men, with a vision to create an attractive high quality shopping area with theme. A place with character. Kansas City nowadays wants mediocrity. You can take that to the bank.
