What's The Value Of A UMKC Diploma?!?!

Reddit is fun because most of the really great content is down-voted and deleted by the snarky hipsters who choose to opine on the forum in between craft beers.

Most of their content is from suburban outsiders, straight up shills or average joe d-bags who mistakenly believe that a passing interest in urban planning makes their opinion any more relevant or interesting than the other guy wearing the hipster designer Royals merch.

HOWEVER . . . This was one rather good conversation concerning a local topic that's worth a look:

(Serious) Is a UMKC degree taken seriously outside of the Kansas City region?

This one holds special interest for TKC . . . Although admittedly getting a almost completely worthless Communication Studies degree in watching movies and the news wasn't the best choice.

The conclusion: The tiny legion of middle-managers don't think so, but they don't really know for sure . . . And no good jokes or bikini pix.

Developing . . .

  1. My kid is a high performing STEM major heading for graduate school.

Some kids are history (or communication arts) majors.

If you actually got a degree, you missed the point that you have to understand the context of each of the students and related goals.

Oversimplifying complex issues may be helpful for blog hits, it just misses the point.

You should get your money back from UMKC.

  2. UMKC.....didn't know it existed before moving to Kansas City. Still don't have a clue where it's located.

If Tony Botellol is representative of a UMKC graduate, I would strongly agree with 11:13. Get your money back.

  3. But you seem to love Tony Botello's blog despite your constant bitching. What up with that?

  4. ^^^^^^^^^^ Now comments are considered bitching ^^^^^^^^^^^^ so much for "Free Speech", huh ?

Seriously doubt that lame whiners will silence truth. But you keep trying.

  5. They have a good Dental school. Try not to get murdered driving there.

  6. I agree ii:23 is someone whose has proven their education is very limited. But like the other just nothing but haters on here it don't stop them from posting stupid shit, bitching about Tony or bitching about his family.

  7. Apparently, the Denizen's have little regard for criticism.

Odd, because a random review of this blog site shows about 95% criticism of all things. So, freedom of speech is tolerance of whining.

That level of logic is about, lets see, a GED student.

    Carry on.

  9. Most college degrees today are pretty much worthless and it seems o one wants to stand up and admit it. Unless you are going for a professional degree there are so many other and better ways to generate ample income.

Right no there is a high school in the Wichita area that gets girls their LPN license before they leave high school. They then go to work at about $45,000.00 a year plus overtime. While working they can participate in an LPN to RN bridge program and get their RN license where their pay jumps to the low $60's before overtime. If they go on to work in a goverment facility like the VA they can get their education paid all the way through Nurse Practitioner, which pays them right at $100k plus overtime. I don't know any college that can have it's graduates working at 100K inside of 5 years with absolutely no college loans to pay off.

These freaking state colleges have turned as shitty as most of the trade schools when it comes to delivering bang for your bucks. I can not imagine folks even tolerating a world where you leave college with $100K in debt and no real prospects for substantive income. In the mean time these school bureaucrats want to sit back and blow smoke up your ass about the value of a liberal education. They just don't get that even Einstein wouldn't have much time to be a smart guy if he was starving to death trying to find a job. Academics as a racket has to change.

    We've got truth @ 11:57 & 1:00PM, the rest is just trash.

  11. Sure academics is a racket ran by many states and colleges. Most run scam jobs blowing smoke up your ass about all the things the education you will get from them will give you. I know a man who graduated from UMKC six years ago and still hasn't found work in his field of education. What companies he is getting inquires from are seeking him out at 13 and 15 dollars an hour which is below the pay he is getting now working a job where his education played no factor at all in getting hired. Plus now he is being told he'll need to go get refresher courses since he has been out of school for so long. So yes he has a huge student loan to pay back and so far it's been worthless for him and the bastards are now wanting him to spend even more money. Clarkson pays good wages and could care less if you you have a BA or a MA for the most part in anything for a large part of the work force they need.

  12. Tony, did you see the other thread on Reddit? The one where everyone was laughing at this blog, calling it a "disgrace" and an "embarrassment." The comment where someone said that this site is "virtual Klan gathering" was interesting.

  13. The UMKC school of engineering is outstanding. Got my BSME there in 1980. I still volunteer there. We place students at Black & Veatch, Burns&iMac, HNTB.

  14. Yes, unfortunately 95 percent of the degrees from UMKC are not in engineering a field that does well in general.

  15. If people don't like UMKC, they can eat the corn out of my Chipotle salsa turd.

  16. We already have that on the agenda for next year when Hilliary comes to speak. We figure anyone who will let us spend $200k on her appearance will swallow anything

  19. 1:00 what high school is that and are there any programs around here? Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  20. Campus High School in the Haysville School District. The program is about 4 years old. As far as I know there are no such programs in KC. Probably because no one would attend school long enough to complete the program..LOL

    ReplyDelete
  21. I went to college to avoid wearing a KFC shirt. Now, nearly eight years later since graduating, it looks like I will have no choice but to put one on soon. College was the biggest swindle of our times.

    ReplyDelete
  22. 4:21 I meant in the suburbs. I know damn well that wouldn't work in KCMO. That program sounds amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 6:25 I have no idea because I have not researched locally. I can't imagine why Shawnee or other JoCo schools could not implement similar programs. I can also tell you that this Haysville school system down there is amazing.

I was told that a few years back they had an FAA Air Frame and Power Plant course certifying aircraft mechanics and a ground school program that could lead to a single engine aircraft license. This is not a "fat cat" area either. It is suburban/rural with pretty much blue collar residents. if you are researching it is Unified 261 in Kansas

  24. If Jermaine Reed can graduate from UMKC with a Master's Degree, that should tell you that a degree from this University is worthless; especially considering his persistent stupidity.

  25. Let me sit down and f-ing rest. It's just so hard to believe that the black hating, misogynists , NASCAR loving. Klaners that make up 80% of this site are opposed to higher ed.

After all, it must be a conspiracy.

Those foreign students paying out of State tuition that are coming from Countries that are actually prospering must be doing so because they are duped by the Libtards. Not that they will represent 15% of the admitted medical school students.

The absolute ignorance of this group is beyond comprehension. That means, to understand.

    Jeebus.

  26. it doesn't matter where or what your degree is anymore, it's what you choose to do with yourself. People are so entitled thinking that a degree alone will get them a job.

It's all about networking and getting out there and meeting people in person and forming relationships to get you ahead, regardless of the field of work. There's no substitute for networking in person.

You can't live the rest of your life in you're mom's basement, there's a much bigger world out there than KCMO or the Golden Ghetto...

    ReplyDelete
  27. 10:50 you are the ignorant one. Those foreign students come here for FREE while we get five or six figures in student loan debt. University presidents actively recruit foreign students because our government in their infinite wisdom subsidizes their tuition and living expenses while our own citizens become indentured servants.
