Not everything is clean in the Golden Ghetto

Dear Pool Operator:

Three cases of Cryptosporidiosis (Crypto) have been confirmed in individuals in Johnson County. Crypto is a parasitic disease that can cause loose, watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and a slight fever. It can be spread by swallowing water (either from swimming or drinking) or food contaminated by human feces, usually from tiny amounts that cannot be seen. It can also be spread from person to person, especially in settings such as daycare centers where diapers are changed regularly.

To prevent the spread of the disease, the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment encourages you to be extremely diligent when maintaining your chlorine levels. Because Crypto can be somewhat chlorine resistant, we ask that you try to keep your chlorine levels toward the upper end of the range, 5-10 ppm. Also, the following information should be posted at your facility:

• PLEASE do not swim when you have diarrhea. You can spread germs in the water and make other people sick.
• PLEASE do not swallow pool water. Avoid getting water in your mouth
• PLEASE practice good hygiene. Shower with soap and water before swimming and wash your hands after using the toilet or changing diapers. Germs on your body end up in the water.
• PLEASE take your kids on bathroom breaks or check diapers often. Waiting to hear “I have to go” may mean that it’s too late.
• PLEASE change diapers in a bathroom or a diaper-changing area and not at poolside. Germs can be spread to surfaces and object in and around the pool.
• PLEASE wash your child thoroughly with soap and water before swimming. Invisible amounts of fecal matter can end up in the pool.

If any of your pool’s patrons have had the above-mentioned symptoms, please have them contact their doctor immediately. Thank you for your cooperation.
