City Hall discussion of a new Kansas City airport and badly needed improvements has taken a backseat to the desperate effort to maintain sky high local taxes.
To wit . . .
KICK-ASS KANSAS CITY INSIDERS TELL US THAT MAYOR SLY JAMES HAS ESTABLISHED A POWERLESS AND PRETTY MUCH DEFUNCT AIRPORT COMMITTEE THAT WILL HAVE EXTREMELY LIMITED MEETINGS UNTIL AFTER THE E-TAX VOTE IS COMPLETE!!!
Don't take my word for it . . .
Go to the City Hall website, check out the new Airport Committee and look for any upcoming meetings scheduled. As of this writing there are NONE.
This is troubling for more than a few reasons.
First and foremost . . .
By the city's own admission the resident satisfaction with this facility have declined . . .
Notable satisfaction decreases since the last Citizen Satisfaction Survey . . .
Airport services:
– Facility cleanliness (-5.6%)
– Parking availability (-4.7%)
– Parking price (-4.7%)
– Ease of security (-3.0%)
Accordingly . . .
IF KCMO IS DISSATISFIED WITH THE AIRPORT THEN MAYBE IT'S TIME FOR THIS COMMITTEE TO SCHEDULE SOME MEETINGS RATHER THAN SIT AROUND AND WAIT FOR MAYOR SLY'S ORDERS . . . NOW IS THE TIME FOR CITY COUNCIL AND AIRPORT COMMITTEE CHAIR JOLIE JUSTUS TO START DOING SOMETHING WITH NEWFOUND POWER!!!
Moreover . . .
TWO WEEKS IS TOO LONG FOR 4TH DISTRICT COUNCIL LADY JOLIE JUSTUS TO SIT AROUND WAITING TO CALL A MEETING!!!
It is past time for the 4th District to start demanding work from this politico instead of offering up their unquestioning adoration simply because of identity politics.
Clearly, the citizen satisfaction survey says there are improvements that City Hall can make to the airport NOW . . .
Furthermore . . . KCI is just sitting on $75 MILLION worth of cash reserves according to airline insiders that they would rather dedicate to a new airport.
Instead, it's better to have the discussion about making improvements NOW rather than scuttling the facility hoping for another voter payday.
Whatever the case . . . The time for Council Lady Justus to do some work and stop earning accolades over her lifestyle choice, quick smile and friendly manner is now at hand and we wait to see if she'll get busy as Airport Committee Chair instead of simply taking orders from Mayor Sly. Like it or not, THIS little test will reveal a lot more about her character as an elected official rather than all of those hopeless crusades she undertook as part of a powerless Democratic Party super-minority in Jeff City.

Apparently someone has realized that citizens are tired of major special interest projects like toy trains, big hotels and airports while struggling to make it through day-to-day life as someone who lives in the city. And the more talk of more projects will only hurt the chances on the eTax. So hold off on the airport talk until late April, after the eTax passes, and then spring the airport on everyone without much public debate or transparency just like the convention hotel. Sounds like Sly.
