Today's bit of Kansas City political theater was a poorly attended event on 18th and Vine wherein the New Council and Mayor Sly were inaugurated.
With record low turnout and already a great deal of grassroots opposition to upcoming streetcar, downtown convention hotel and new airport plans . . . The tone of this even seemed nearly institutional and centered on stressing the dominance of a Mayor already fading in popularity and unable to interests the vast majority of the city in turning out to vote.
Even worse for Mayor Sly James . . . The prospect of opposition has clearly shaken his administration into far more aggressive tactics.
Amid this day of bold pronouncements here's the money line from a defiant Mayor Sly CLEARLY ALREADY THREATENED by his detractors . . .
"I don't believe in games. I don't believe in politics. I believe in results." - MayorSlyJames at Inauguration ceremony.
Even better . . .

New Council Committee Perspective From CFRG
City Council Members,
Congratulations again to the new members on your successful election.
Today the mayor is asking you to consider expanding the council to 10 committees. We believe the reason he is rushing this move is to try and force it before everybody has a chance to analyze it completely. While being the chairperson of a committee might seem like an honor be careful not to get too wrapped up in it.
We believe the mayor is splitting you up so he has better control over the council (divide and conquer). This is not a good move. We have managed fine for many years the way the council is structured. Maybe one or two new committees could be added if it makes sense.
Expanding to10 committees gives the mayor10 different places to send ordinances for review. He can pick and choose which committee best serves his purpose and has fewer members to intimidate to get his way. To put this kind of power in his hands is dangerous. They don’t call him SLY for nothing.

Did the fabulous 50 rattle their jewelery in the front row seats while those in the cheap seats settled for hand clapping?
ReplyDelete99% of Kansas Citians know NOTHING about this
ReplyDeleteSaturday morning at 10 a.m. is not the best time to do this. Most people are sleeping in or hungover from Friday night.
ReplyDeleteEveryone clanked pieces of streetcar rail together whenever the applause sign went green 12:18
ReplyDeleteGlad I didn't go because it would have been impossible for me to not burst out in gut wrenching laughter as he read off all his prepared talking points.
ReplyDeleteFour more years of out of control disorganized chaos.
