MUST READ!!! ST. JOE SKEPTICAL OF KANSAS CITY NEW AIRPORT PLANS!!!

Let's not forget that the airport is a regional amenity drawing people from throughout the Kansas City metro and beyond.

And so, it's important to consider the opinion of nearby towns not getting tax breaks from City Hall or otherwise compromised when it comes to providing an honest assessment.

A Kansas City Insider tells us: "You'll never see a column like this in the Star."

Take a look:

News Press Now St. Joe: Airport fight not over

Money line . . .

"The group did not give in-depth specifics but offered the explanation that this recommendation primarily was about convenience — there’s that word again — security and affordability. All of the buzz after the announcement was about how the study group now believes building a new terminal would cost significantly less than a major renovation of the existing terminals.

"We agree with U.S. Rep. Sam Graves it is hard to comprehend how a renovation project, which the study group said would come in at more than $1 billion, would cost more than building a large single terminal from scratch. Like everyone else, we look forward to specifics and an apples-to-apples comparison."

Read the whole thing where the newspaper runs down their concerns what still haven't been answered by Mayor Sly, the outgoing City Council or anybody else.

  5. KC should turn the regional airport over to the city of St Joseph. At least there might be competent management and half a chance the thing will be close to budget.

  6. St. joe? This has to be a joke.

  7. LOL.....St Jo. Hell, they are still using covered wagons and oxen.

  8. Along with a new airport we need to shift back to modern DC-3's to compliment the modern streetcars!

  9. St Joe can't be too bad. At least they didn't sit on their asses and blow tax dollars just to fuck up a perfectly good airport

  10. Sly and company PROMISED there would be a VOTE OF THE PEOPLE for a new airport.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Well, he meant if you reelectd him you were buying a new airport

    ReplyDelete
  12. Let's see, once Sly is re-elected it becomes "apparent" to everyone, airlines included, that a new airport would be cheaper and more "convenient" and as such all plans for renovation should be shelved in favor of proceeding with plans for a new airport.

    A couple of guesses:

    - Sly and company from the Port Authority never considered anything else, and any delay in reporting these "findings" was designed to ensure that the issue didn't become a referendum sure to draw other mayoral contenders.

    - The airlines were promised something for their agreement. My guess, they were probably given informal assurances that landing fees won't increase. Additionally, their logistical operational costs will decrease in a centralized design. Remember, the airlines' concern is THEIR bottom dollar, not the City's cost or convenience of the user.

    - There will be NO public vote. We'll end up with a new airport, that will come in at least 50% higher than current estimates and will cost quite a bit more than renovations will cost.

    - The higher than expected costs will cause the City to have to increase landing fees, no matter what was informally promised. This, in turn, will cause the airlines to raise ticket prices to cover these additional fees. This will serve to decrease ridership, which over time will result in reduced service to KC.

    - At the end of the day, we'll end up with a horribly expensive facility, less flight options, and much less "convenience" for the average KC traveler who values quick ingress / egress over a Starbucks and a McDonalds next to the gate.

For example of the way this likely plays out, see the Cincinnati airport...

  13. No one in St. Joe has enough money to fly anyway.
    What a fucking joke.

Also, 2:51 is a fucking idiot.
Landing fees will increase, they have to.

  14. If landing fees will increase, the airlines will pass those costs along in the form of higher ticket prices. Higher ticket prices equate to lower utilization (that's called "economics"), and lower utilization will mean fewer flights (since the airlines are in the business of filling planes and not catering to your schedule). The only hope against this inevitable conclusion is that the new airport is just so damn "nifty" that more people will choose to fly, even if it is at a higher cost.

  15. Was smoking some good weed with a young lad in San Fran few days ago.

We were both flying out, young blood was headed to Tampa. He ask where is was going. I said Kansas City. He started laughing.

I ask what was so funny. He said Kansas City. As he walked off laughing, I thought to myself, "if that young dude is laughing at me for living in Kansas City, it must be a shit hole".

I changed my ticket to Tampa and now have a nice condo overlooking the ocean, sunny weather, lots of golf, pretty young girls everywhere, and almost no negro crime. Most of it has been encapsulated in a small ghetto area that regulars avoid.

Life is good. I meet the young dude form time to time on the beach to smoke a little herb, and I always thank him for laughing.

  16. Last night went to KCI to pick-up family.

Too easy in and out, better 'knock it all down' and have five years of construction delays and confusion.

The big profit from the KCI re-do goes to the bond dealers and bond lawyers.

Standard three percent to each group for the estimated billion and a half of bonds would only be $90,000,000.00 off the top.

  17. What kind of grown up gets a fucking ride to and from the airport.

Jesus fucking Christ you people are fucking rubes.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Air fares will increase substantially, and KCI will have fewer flights!

Now that's just the way to attract more conventions, NOT!!
