Kansas City Fair Wage Fight In The 6th District

6th District contender Henry Klein has been one of the busiest campaigners so far this election season and now he's speaking to the current fair wage that has taken hold in protest across Kansas City.

Take a look:

Klein Proposes City-Wide Minimum Wage Conference

(Kansas City, Missouri) Henry Klein, a candidate for 6th District, In-District, Kansas City, Missouri has proposed working with the mayor and the city council on a city-wide minimum wage conference. "The idea is to bring all the stakeholders together in an effort to examine how our current minimum wage compares to a living wage and if there is a way to increase the minimum wage while still protecting our small businesses. It's important that we understand how a wage increase would impact employment in Kansas City as well as to find ways to help our citizens earning the minimum wage be able to support themselves and their families," Klein said.

Currently, the state of Missouri, as of January 1, 2015, now legally mandates a $7.65/hour minimum wage which is just above the federal $7.25/hour.
Klein noted, "There are Missouri laws that mandate that no employer be obligated to pay more the $7.65/hour. Allowing local municipalities the right to determine there own wage scale is in keeping with the ideas behind letting the people closest to a given situation self determine what is in their best interest. We're likely going to need to have either a vote in the legislature or a statewide vote to allow us to make our own determination pending what comes out of the conference."

"When the largest retail discounter and the largest employer in the country (Wal-Mart) understands that paying their people above the minimum wage is just good business, it is just one more confirmation that this is truly worth exploring. It will be up to the conference to map all of this out but the end result has the potential to elevate all of Kansas City. The really good news - paying people a higher minimum wage will result in these wage earners putting that money immediately back into our local economy. It could be a classic win-win," Klein commented.

  1. When is someone going to start fighting skyrocketing rents, utilities, food costs, taxes, etc. As long as the cost of living keeps going up begging for a higher wage is fruitless.

  4. When I hear "minimum wage" I see economic ignorance. When I hear "stakeholder", I see socialist blather.

  5. Pandering for votes without the slightest idea of or responsibility for the consequences is a long-time well-tested campaign tradition that seldom ends well, especially for the taxpayers or city as a whole.
And it just attracts more little groups who want, no demand, special attention and financial consideration.
Add up all the campaign promises and judge how much they cost, because you'll end up paying for them in the long run.
