Today the Kansas City's African-American community led the local discourse.
The Urban Summit focused on education and advocated for a fair wage: The fight to raise minimum wage in Kansas City heated up today at the 8th Annual Urban Summit.
Meanwhile, from what we're hearing back, today's KC Call Forum was productive and well attended but maybe not as spirited as in days past.
However . . .
WE HEAR THE GENERAL WAS IN RARE FORM DURING THE KC CALL EVENT!!!
On second thought, maybe The General is the epitome of this election season 2015.
Still, on a more serious note . . . The theme that we're hearing from a few local insiders is this:
KANSAS CITY'S AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY MIGHT NOT BE INSPIRED TO COME OUT AND VOTE FOR MAYOR SLY THIS TIME AROUND!!!
In fairness, overall experts expect this to be very low turnout election for EVERYBODY.
But think about this:
In the 3rd and 5th Districts there is an impressive contingent of grassroots candidates attempting to overturn the status quo . . . Meanwhile, Mayor Sly has failed to earn any significant endorsements on the East Side of Troost and he's mostly been a candidate of the corporate elite and his fellow lawyers.
There's always a persistent question about what any candidate has done to improve life on Kansas City's Eastside . . . Mayor Sly answers this question with a litany of efforts that have no meaningful benchmarks or signs of success.
Here's the overriding fact: Mayor Sly's power base doesn't come from the urban core, his power emanates from corporate board rooms and while the Mayor likes to talk "race" just as much as anybody . . . When it comes to real community work . . . His only real "accomplishment" seems to be driving East Side voters away from the polls by way of rigged streetcar election or his own confrontational style served up with a smile.

ReplyDeleteThe 150 people who were surrounded by mostly completely empty tables at the Urban summit meeting today aren't going to do a thing to raise the minimum wage or much of anything else unless it benefits them personally financially.

And given what regularly goes on there, that takes some real work!

ReplyDeleteWhat the latest gang of east side "leaders" has long forgotten is that influence at city hall, other levels of government, or even business comes from votes, in the case of business, with your money.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't come from demands, mindlessly marching around, or lying in the street.
In the last mayoral primary the TOTAL number of votes in the 3rd District was 5000. A councilmanic district has around 70,000 residents.
Just like in Ferguson, Mo, where the black voter turnout in the last election was in the single digits.
Now let's find some excuses and someone to blame!
And when they do come out to vote, 6:34pm. Blacks allow groups like freedom, inc tell them who to vote for. It's totally pointless to vote if you don't know who or what you're voting for. Black people are inherently lazy. And yes, they'll blame everybody under the sun except themselves.

Nobody for Mayor would also work except for the need for a swing vote in a Council tie.
