NEWSFLASH!!! DOWNTOWN KANSAS CITY STAYS LOSING JOBS DESPITE MASSIVE TAXPAYER SUBSIDY AND HOPE FOR THE UPCOMING TOY TRAIN STREETCAR!!!

Turns out the entire Kansas City region is suffering an economic setback and hype about the advantage of city centers over suburban counterparts hasn't yet played out inside the loop. Example: "From 2007 to 2011, job growth in Kansas City's city center decreased by 0.4 percent, and the area suburbs decreased by 3.2 percent."

In other words and contrary to consultant propaganda, there isn't much evidence of increase economic activity Downtown despite a decade of one taxpayer subsidized and money losing big ticket after the next: Is Kansas City's Downtown really revitalized? - Kansas City Business Journal

  2. Most of the jobs being created downtown pay about $176.00 a week max. But you do get to call yourself a sanitation specialist (janitor) - artisan beverage curator (bartender) etc.

    1. Usage is tricky on this one, but either works in this case.

And: Oh no! Not a RUBE! My God, why can't we all be from Portlandia or San Francisco?

  6. What? A KC Newspaper committed an act of journalism? And opposed City Hall talking points?

Let's hope the Star doesn't find out.

  7. Alright I'll gibe you a pass on that one, although 'devoid' is clearly your better option.

  8. It has not worked. Let’s get some new leaders who will focus on making KCMO a good place to live and give up on trying to revitalize Downtown at taxpayer expense.

  13. The streetcar will solve all this. Once that two-mile amusement park ride is in, Wall Street will decide Kansas City is much safer than a place too close to the ocean and move here, and most if not all of the San Francisco and Silicon Valley will look at Kansas City and decide to opt for a place without earthquakes. And we'll owe it all to the streetcar.

  14. What is seldom amplified is the real issue of income. You can have 100 percent employment and if folks are making 30 percent less than they were five years ago life still sucks. What really is frustrating is that if folks still worked 40 hours per week they would be making 25 to 30 percent less. The only thing that reduces their loss is the fact that so many wage earners are no working two or more jobs to attempt to prevent loosing more ground. The politicians can wave the flag about how much better the economy is, but the quality of life still generally sucks in America while or European counterpart work and average of 36 hours per week and, make more, have more disposable income and have more time off than any continent on earth. It's time for America to start getting the straight scoop and the politicians and corporations need to knocks of the positive spin on a whole lot of lifes bullshit that isn't close to going away. Because of the way figures are distorted we will likely never know what the real job/income impact has been over the past decade in KC, but I can bet if the real data was unburied things would look like shit in KC.

  15. Once the development the streetcar brings in is done, Kansas City will look like and have all the charm of Benidorm. Except Benidorm doesn't have a streetcar, so we'll be even better!

  18. But streetcars are hot!!!

A D.C. Streetcar being tested caught fire on H Street late Saturday night, according to the District Department of Transportation.

DC residents aren’t exactly looking forward to the streetcar, which is increasing traffic congestion and slowing bus service in the corridor. This is just one more example, locals note, of “corporate welfare and the edifice complex.”

  21. So what your saying is suburban job growth decreased 8 TIMES more city center jobs growth.

So the urban core is doing MUCH BETTER at maintaining job growth than the suburbs...

  22. KCMO needs to figure out how to get businesses, small and large, back downtown. It's great that more and more people are living downtown. And it's great that more and more food service people are working downtown and such. But the city needs to get more high quality paying companies back downtown. That's one of the major things holding downtown KCMO back.

  23. It would help if JoCO didn't fork over historic tons of taxpayer cash to any business in the metro to move to their supposedly "desirable" place.

Guess you do what you gotta do when you live in a place that's a national laughingstock and could attract a business from more than 5 miles away to save it's life.
