TKC NOTE: Here's an important word from a Northeast advocate regarding last night's Citizen Association meeting regarding the busted Kansas City budget.
Here's an important money quote from one of Kansas City's youngest political hopefuls . . .
Bryan Stalder seyz: "I'm not okay with avoiding the problems east of Troost, or simply displacing those "problems" with half million dollar housing developments along Troost Ave. I'm trying to explain this from my perspective as a Neighborhood Association President and not a City Council Candidate, but in this instance, it is going to overlap because these issues are the main reason that I decided to take time away from my family and neighborhood and put resources toward running an At Large race against two established politicians with decades of experience; because no one seems to SERIOUSLY want to tackle the east side problems.
"I believe that what we are trying to do with our "Save Thacher, Save Our Schools," efforts *directly addresses* the concerns that were brought up by numerous members of the audience at the meeting tonight."

Citizens Association Meeting
I attended the meeting at the library this evening, and I have some thoughts to share, (although I hesitate to bring it up because "Save Thacher, Save Our Schools" is getting ready to pitch a very big ask from both the city and school board, and I figure this could turn some people sour with me right before we make that presentation.) Ultimately, I feel that this issue is directly related to those efforts, so that's why I'm moving forward with this.
There were multiple questions from the audience tonight regarding education and investment (or lack thereof) in Kansas City's 3rd and 5th Districts. Troy Shulte was very excited to announce that homes are selling for a half million dollars in Beacon Hill, but that led to another great question from a 3rd District Candidate about gentrification.
One of the panelists jumped in and stated that we shouldn't focus so much attention on the Kansas City Public Schools because it is just one of fourteen school districts in Kansas City. Then Troy Shulte agreed. To his credit, he pointed out that KCPS is making positive strides in the right direction, but it was clear that neither of the two men who are in charge of the city's budget are *that concerned* about Kansas City Public Schools or what more we can do as a city to shed the negative image of that district or help the children in these communities that are facing outside challenges which prevent them from progressing their education.
This isn't the first time that I've heard people point out that only one or two of our school districts are struggling and that the others are all great, but it's more or less a "That's *their* problem (ifyouknowwhatImean)" argument that I have never accepted, and am frankly depressed to hear it come officially from our city manager.
Bottom line; I'm not okay with avoiding the problems east of Troost, or simply displacing those "problems" with half million dollar housing developments along Troost Ave.
I believe that what we are trying to do with our "Save Thacher, Save Our Schools," efforts *directly addresses* the concerns that were brought up by numerous members of the audience at the meeting tonight. I hadn't originally planned on writing to you about our "Save Thacher, Save Our Schools," meeting, but it's naturally progressed to that, so I'll just mention that we have reserved a space at the Northeast Branch Library, 6000 Wilson Rd, on Monday, February 23 at 6:30. The room probably only holds around 50 people, but if more than 50 people showed up to hear our presentation or show support for tackling east side challenges, I'd be surprised. It'd be great if some of your readers will make an effort to show up, because our hope is that we can not only successfully Save Thacher, but then replicate that success with other vacant schools in east side communities.

Chuck the bow tie please.
ReplyDeleteNERD
ReplyDeleteBryan Stalder provides a clear and mature choice to the two old people, and the very odd boy in the 4th District At Large race.
ReplyDeleteOur goal should be to remove Glover, and certainly make certain that Katheryn Shields does not bring the "weird" accounting practices that she used to nearly break the County to City Hall. The weird accounting practices really should have been what landed Katheryn in Federal Court. She would still be doing time.
We do not need to put up with Glover, who is lost most of the time. We do not have to give a crook the keys to the City Treasury. Bryan Stalder is the way to go.
This is bullshit! I want bush, pan down
ReplyDelete6:19 AM makes sense. he or she must not be a regular reader of this blog. it eats your brain after a while.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to get a perspective from someone who actually gives a shit about their hood and the city instead of just about their power and office.
ReplyDeleteBut yes, lose the bow tie.
Mr. Stalder states that he's running against two politicians with decades of experience.
ReplyDeleteThat's not quite accurate.
He's running against people who have done the same things over and over again hoping for a different result. And nothing they've done has anything to do with the betterment of their community or the residents who live there.
That's not decades of experience. It's one year 20 times.
If Bryan hammers Katy on her mismanagement of the County budget, then he CAN make the cut in the primary. If that happens he has a real shot.
ReplyDeleteBut Bryan you need to really dig down into The Star records and friends at the County. Ask about her use of un-bid contracts that were issued only on her signature. The County Legislature was supposed to oversee spending but Shields decided she was Queen.
Hammer her on the county finances then you can show people that Glover is unfit to serve in the General.
The best way to help East of Troost is to tear down the vacant and boarded up houses - quit waiting for investors to buy them up and rehab them, it isn't going to happen. Then give tax breaks to young people, artists and gays to move East of Troost. They will fix up their properties, housing values will rise as will property taxes and it will tax the riff-raff out of the area.
ReplyDeleteAlso, a stronger gang unit is needed to really put an end to these little gangs that are shooting each other over who is selling weed, who owes who money and other stupid stuff like that.
7:01 AM and Old Hand have it right.
ReplyDeleteHe can win this but he needs to do two things: 1) Focus on Shields first to get into the primary -- besides, her spendthrift ways at the JaxCo provide ample issues to use to defeat her; 2) Just stand next to Glover as much as possible in the General Election -- no one will chose that confused, mumbling fool.
oh Geez...first a nigger now a faggot.
ReplyDeleteIt's not a serious campaign. Stalder, go back to running for den mother or whatfuckingever.
ReplyDeleteAnd Mensa boy's back herf derfing.
ReplyDeleteBryan. Who is supposed to come up with the cash to renovate Thatcher?
ReplyDeleteThis project cannot pay for itself (no, it can't. please know what you are talking about) so who is supposed to pay for it?
KCPS? The school district should not spend its money on anything but educating students and its operating facilities.
KCPS has buckets of money to spend on renovating school buildings. It just spent $3.5 million to renovate Hale Cook for just 100 mostly white-soon-to-be-all-white students at 74th & Pennsylvania. Of course, it helps if the founder of Friends of Hale Cook, Ashley Hand, is the Mayor's Innovation Officer and her husband Gunnar is on the KCPS school board. Doesn't hurt that the Mayor's Education Officer Julie Holland is also a Friends of Hale Cook board member. Being on the board paid in spades for Julie whose buddy Ashley got her that well-paying, glad-handing, do-nothing job -- kinda like Ashley's job description!
ReplyDeleteBut money for those 'po folks' in the NE -- sorry, only got enough money for a tear-down.
He's cute. I'd suck his brains out of his penis if he'd let me!!!! Yummmy!!!
ReplyDelete10:33.
ReplyDeleteHale Cook was mothballed because it was in good enough shape to reopen, and because the neighborhood worked its collective ass off to get it reopened. All their open classrooms are full. This effort was well underway before Hand was involved.
Thatcher has been closed and KCPS never intended to reopen it. You want to reopen an elementary school? Pick a building that can reasonably be renovated, and then work for 3 years to get it done. Hale Cook will help you do that.
Stadlers plan does not involve it being a school. Why should KCPS be involved?
