Kansas City Neighborhoods Continue To Talk In Circles Over Westport School Re-purposing

The fact is that a mild winter devastated all of the abandoned KCMO public schools far more than anybody wants to admit and it's time to start a "TEAR DOWN" plan rather than entertaining fantasies of building again. Check it: Developers present plans for Westport Middle and High School buildings

  1. Many residents and council candidates in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th districts have voiced support for repurposing these many of these schools into community centers to create anchors of investment in their neighborhoods. This is what we are trying to do with Thacher on Independence Avenue. The plan falls right in line with the Kansas City Public Schools Master Plan and KCMO government's attempts to reduce crime, create dense communities, promote public transit and healthier lifestyles. These schools are a perfect opportunity for partnerships that could have a dramatic impact on neighborhoods that have seen stagnant or negative growth.

Unfortunately, Switzer is just one example of the terrible mess that can happen if this process is not handled correctly. Additional oversight is needed, but we should not simply start tearing down historic buildings because they're a nuisance. In many communities, they're the most valuable asset they have toward rebuilding.

  3. They going to turn them into great neighborhood hangouts such as theatrepubs, movie theaters and live music venues like the McMmennamin Brothers in Portland?

Oh wait, this is KC and we don't have nice things like that here.

  4. Sure we can 10:48.
All it takes is some private business people with private money to see the commercial viability and opportunities you describe, buy the buildings, and see if they can make a go of it.
There's a very long list of basic responsibilities that folks depend on local governments to address and entertainment isn't one of them.
Except in KCMO with endless debt.
