A bit of a power ranking tonight . . . Let's start with the Kansas City good news . . .
OUR TKC BLOG COMMUNITY RANKS ABOVE EVERY OTHER NEWS OUTLET IN THE KANSAS CITY METRO AREA!!!
When talking participation, readers and media mentions . . . No other news-y outlet even came close in 2014.
But let's take a moment to look at other local media outlets to see who we are competing against . . . Even if the Internets long tail provides enough bandwidth for EVERYONE to have a place and develop a niche for their expression and online adventures - A fact that neither publishers nor advertisers can wrap their heads around given the limitless possibilities of cyberspace.

ThisisKC.com - Brought to us by KC Magazine. There's no denying that this blog/Internet venture has the best profit model in town and it's so enjoyable to read catalog style content that's mostly sponsored but still very pleasing. What's important this year is that this media group was able to OUTPERFORM THE PITCH BEST OF ISSUE and their awards to advertisers were displayed prominently throughout Kansas City and earned a greater social media presence.
Midtown KC Post - This blog is affiliated with the transit cabal but the very nice lady who runs this operation does a great deal of boring public issue reporting at City Hall. The stories are well-researched and nice but mostly based on City Hall press releases. Still, there is more than ample disclosure about advertiser interests and connection to streetcar organizations. The blog updates a couple times a day with longer form content that's usually very informative.
Daily Pitch - The biggest disappointment of 2014 has been the Pitch moving most of their content to Facebook. This move has caused their website ranking to plummet into a downward spiral. Lots of FB comments have not sustained the performance built up by former managing editor Joe Tone. Display ad prices are at an all time low on the Pitch website and it's unclear if their advertising relationships will be tenable once more local biz starts to learn about better rates from ThisIsKC.com
KC Star Buzz Blog - This blog is comprised mostly of what Steve Kraske and Dave Helling read on Politico.com. They tried a content limiting subscription that didn't work and then they went dormant for a few months. Part-timer Kraske tries to blog some press releases but comments are restricted and the news has been mostly downgraded from anything on The Star's increasingly crowded and ugly front page.
KC Confidential - Hearne is a son of privilege and year after year doesn't want to commit to doing the work required to maintain a daily blog. There might be some future here if Hearne starts writing more about his own interesting life but now the blog is pretty much dormant, has cut off user commentary and goes days without any significant content.
Kansas City Chiefs Football Blogs - Arrowhead Pride and Arrowhead Addict are the most vibrant an well-read blogs in Kansas City. Sadly, the conversation about sports far eclipses any other reader community or interest in town. Based on sponsorship and MSM mention, these blogs easily outpace all other efforts including TKC in terms of profit potential. It's clear that sports blogs are the cash cow of the in this town.
What's Up KC - This blog deserves mention because it has the most potential. This African-American community focused media effort has a new design and they regularly break a lot of news that doesn't always make it to the mainstream. There's not a lot of user response but a few tweeks could make this one of KC's top blog and might easily outpace TKC.

Still, this year traffic increased measurably and user participation continues to be at an all time high as the Internets continues to outpace traditional media outlets that no longer have a monopoly on influence among Kansas City voters and denizens.
