MUST SEE!!! KANSAS CITY URBAN FARMING EFFORT TOUTS WINNING 2014!!!

Here's a bit of alternative end of year urban core hope for Kansas City.

URBAN FARMING KANSAS CITY EFFORTS CLAIM A WINNING YEAR IN THEIR EFFORTS TO TRANSFORM AN EMBATTLED LOCAL NEIGHBORHOOD!!!

Take a look:

The most important part of their statement:

“The Urban Farming Guys” are a passionate band of pioneers working and living fully immersed in one of the most dangerous inner city zip-codes in the U.S. 64127 in the urban core of Kansas City. Beginning with no money, & no buildings , we began to pour our lives into hundreds of youth within walking distance of our inner-city homes, and something great began to emerge. Our organization has been informally working in the inner city of Kansas City for over eight years but we were officially established as a 501c3 in 2012.

"Our home base is in an area of the city that is plagued with hopelessness and more than half of students not graduating high school in the first four years. Many children with only one parent and a serious lack of mentors and role models within reach. We are at a very catalytic moment in our history. In the last few years, our organization's efforts have come into full bloom . . ."

  1. This is actually a pretty good idea and has shown positive impact in other cities.

  2. Let's look at the euphemism "pioneer"? It once meant "Manifest Destiny" and now "pioneer" in Kansas City means "Gentrification or Re Gentrification". Check out the Marathon route that shuts down the city several times a year. These areas blocked off are set to be gentrified. Ever wonder why there is so much murder in a demographic of 50,000 people. The body count is at combat levels every year. Grow some kale and have a smoothie, and Happy New Year!

  3. Congratulations to this group for making a difference. I'm a bit concerned about the stereotype that 64127 is the most dangerous zip code in Kansas City. It's actually wained between 64127, 64130. Why isn't it enough to simply say you're helping in a neighborhood that needs assistance instead of branding an entire district of people. Lots of good comes from either of these zip codes and just because you don't know about it doesn't mean its not happening. I understand this is a marketing campaign so its not meant to be 100% truthful, I guess. Good job anyway.

  4. You don’t have to be a scientist to understand and expect vegetables to have toxic levels of lead and other chemicals in them when they are grown in gardens in big city's. Who do we have to thank for this? Who else? Hipsters. There are now city government programs that are growing, selling and feeding these toxic veggies to poorer residents in lower income area and it all started a few years back with some transplanted red bearded Haydens and Schwinn riding Mollys wanting to have a hobby as they spent a couple years on their playcations.

There is a reason most of this country is farmland – let the REAL farmers do their jobs. If this city really wanted to help out it’s lower income families, it shouldn’t have wasted money on painting bike lanes, changing zoning laws and letting rents get out of control.

  5. 8:57: Do you have any evidence to back up your claim that vegetables grown in "big city's" are toxic?

  6. 8:57 makes valid points. By the very nature of being located in urban communities, which is home to high contamination levels, brownfields and a higher incidence of pollution he/she may have a point.

I also agree that the current zoning changes do massively affect urban development. The new zoning codes went into effect in about 2011, with the majority of property owners having no knowledge of the same. Kansas City is very corrupt and they tend to get away with crimes that the masses fail to recognize or understand.

Yes, it was a total waste of taxpayer resources to paint in bike lanes. I have yet to see any biker peddling in them.

  7. So I guess the first group field trip was to what? Independence Center?

  8. TKC if you want a fanatic story about government toxic waste dumps, please have one of your awesome Tipsters investigate the REAL story about why the EPA moved out of downtown Kansas City Kansas. Start with former mayor and Unified Crooks law suit against the EPA after they moved out the building the second they got the chance. What happened to the law suit?

When I see those poor people working the garden sights the UG has leased to them, I feel sick. Wyandotte County is a third world country.

Let's hear it for spending millions of tax payer money on YMCA's rec centers and walking paths. That's the ticket.

At least these guys are trying. That's more than I can say for most people! LOL

  10. LOL you're crazy. They only help themselves. It's always nice to hear from someone on the payroll. Enjoying your two weeks paid vacation on the tax payers dime? We know you need your R&R after those exhausting 20 hour work weeks, free rounds of golf before the next meeting to discuss how to screw us into bankruptcy even further. You don't have to try hard, you have that down to an art form.

I suspect has little knowledge of or fact-based science behind their opinion concerning phytoremediation.
