Groups receive food donations after the food is expired and cannot be legally sold. Churches without proper storage facilities, so the donated food quickly gets worse. If public feeding is not regulated, then anyone can feed anything to the homeless.

I am certain the homeless will appreciate the city council's concern for their safety. I myself would prefer to starve rather than risk getting sick.

ReplyDeleteLeslie isn't a nut job. These food sharing ministries make huge messes in our neighborhood, and she joined with other neighbors to ask city hall for a solution. In my opinion, that is the wrong approach. It is already illegal to serve food without a permit and/or litter, so all this ordinance does is piss off people who donate their time helping the homeless and point out that the city has failed at enforcing existing laws.
ReplyDeleteA better solution would be to partner with these ministries rather than attempt to over regulate them people put far too much faith and government.
By the way, I live in the 4th district.
ElBryan- I agree with everything you said except that Leslie Caplan is not a nut job. She is a busy body who thinks she is Important because she is a neighborhood president..nobody wants that title unless you want to act important . Heard she is a hated skank in the hood

ReplyDeleteLol; I am neighborhood president of Indian mound. We share a border with Scarritt Renaissance. Granted, I didn't entirely want this title, but I can sympathize with Leslie on being judged for making tough decisions. We're never going to make everyone happy. I happen to disagree with her on this issue, but many over here are in support of the ordinance because we're all frustrated with the litter.

ReplyDelete12:07; not me. When I became Indian mound president by default, I rewrote the bylaws disallowing the board from endorsing ballot initiatives. I am personally against streetcar and have made it clear that many in the neighborhood who don't attend the meetings are against it. Indian Mound is 52% Hispanic but that is not reflected in our neighborhood association. It would be irresponsible to write letters endorsing streetcar in our neighborhood when studies have shown that public transit isn't even the top 10 concerns of residents. Food sharing isn't either, and in fact, I would argue that churches do as much or more for this community as the neighborhood association, so that is why I have refused to support this ordinance and I refuse to speak for anyone other than myself.
