TKC BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS!!! KANSAS CITY FOUNTAIN PROTESTERS RECEIVE CITY HALL THREAT LETTER!!!

Peaceful neighborhood protest of declining Kansas City services has earned threats from City Hall according to AWESOME TKC TIPSTERS.

And this morning OUR TKC BLOG COMMUNITY can check the documentation to prove this claim.

Accordingly . . .

TAKE A LOOK AT KANSAS CITY RESIDENTS BESEECHING THE MAYOR FOR HELP WITH THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD FOUNTAIN ONLY TO BE MET WITH A STERN REBUKE FOR THEIR ACTIVISM FROM CITY HALL!!!

Look back, remember @ the outset of this year we reported that there's no City Hall money to pay for fountains . . . This situation will only get worse as the Summer rolls on . . . Now . . . Here's the story and from a dedicated resident enduring the wrath of City Hall bureaucracy . . .

Fountain at 6700 Wornall Road

The Armour Fields Homes Association (AFHA) today received a threatening letter from the city's public works department insisting that the AFHA remove the sign at the fountain located at 6700 Wornall Road. The sign was placed there several weeks ago by the AFHA board.

Late last year the AFHA was hit with a bill for over $800 representing several years worth of water to the fountain. The AFHA board has maintained this city owned fountain for years and all of the other city owned fountains and islands throughout our association. AFHA was told by the city that the fountain was owned by the association. AFHA knew this was not the case and met with City officials earlier this year. In that meeting the city reluctantly agreed that the fountain and islands are owned by the city but can not afford to maintain them. Translation: they won't maintain them. Sherry McIntyre went so far to threaten to have the fountain removed. AFHA believes that the city should shoulder some if not all of the fiscal responsibility for running the city. It has been dumping its responsibility onto its residents for years. The homes associations pay for island maintenance, snow removal from its streets, private security and many residents are forced to pay for private schools for their children due to the failure of the KCMPSD. We pay to have these things done with our taxes.

The sign needs to stay up until the city fulfills its obligation to properly maintain city assets.

  1. Keep the sign, dump the mayor.

  2. This sign isn't welcoming the RNC? I am surprised it has been up so long!

  7. The city "can't afford to":
    Hire enough cops.
    Keep fire stations open.
    Maintain streets and sidewalks.
    Fix the water department.
Maintain fountains in "the city of fountains".
    Demolish dangerous buildings.
    Try to provide safe neighborhoods.

    Where's all the money going?

  8. It ain't the mayor--it's that fat city manager. He's the one who hires people like sherry Mcintyre.

  9. Mayor Sly James Dada6/4/14, 6:53 AM

I rule Kansas City. By the time I'm done the fountains will run red with taxpayers blood.

  10. Millions for streetcars, but not one cent for fountains.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Can't Slie and city hall call an emergency and move some money to have it turned on?

    ReplyDelete
  12. It's funny that when Sly doesn't care about something like fountains working, it's the city manager's fault and the mayor has no influence.
And if the homicide rate stays terrible year after year, unless Sly's made a strong mayor, gets local control of the PD, and the state assembly tightens the gun laws, "his hands are tied".
But when Sly's bought into some big idea like the streetcar, he become a whirling dervish, cajoling, threatening, arm-twisting, and racing all over town giving speeches and making presentations.
    Priorities.
    What a phony.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Those Armour Hills residents just need to drive a little faster and KC will have the funds to fix the fountain.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Wow, I'm so glad I don't live in KC.

Did anybody read that long thing Tony just posted?

Sucks when TWC is down, but I've noticed streaming TV isn't bad...except for KCHB running really boring 810 Sports radio. Horrible shot, faces covered by mic holders. Obviously those radio guys don't know much about TV.

  15. So as a city we can not afford the run or upkeep fountains. As the city of fountains this is sad.So we can not afford fountains, but think we should pay for a new airport, build a small train that goes nowhere and is way expensive. But its the fountains that we can't afford

    ReplyDelete
  16. Sorry this fountain money is being used to subsidize the free ride we're giving Google.

  26. This can be a great city. Our residents are our greatest assets. People like sly James and Sherry McIntyre are not representative of great people or great minds. They are foolish thugs.
Sorry Armour Fields for the loss of respect shown by city hall. Please remember that you voted in Sly James over Burke because you couldn't stomach a Northlander as Mayor.
Next election please keep that in mind. Northland will not support James, Southland is damned ambivalent about his so called leadership, Eastside lost all love months ago.
Your votes will determine if he is a one termer like Funkhouser. James and Funk are the same thing.

    Peace

    ReplyDelete
  36. Let's see, Brookside and Waldo resisted the streetcar push and now their fountains don't get turned on and their Fire truck gets shut down. Coincidence? I think NOT!

  40. Brian Hand (no relation)6/4/14, 9:18 AM

First, Armour Hills and Armour Fields are two different neighborhoods, it is true that Ashley Hand works for Sly and Gunnar Hand is on the AHHA board. The city pays for maintenance and daily filling of a wading pool, a lifeguard, trash removal, and all other maintenance in one of their parks. Second, Armour Fields has been maintaining the city owned islands and fountains in AFHA for many years. The issue here is the city got greedy and decided that they would charge for the $800 worth of past water when literally hundreds of thousands of dollars have been paid by AFHA residents, through dues and donations, over the years picking up the slack for the city who does NO MAINTENANCE on any of our parks and islands. As the past president of AFHA I know this to be a fact.

  41. I live in Brookside and like many of my neighbors love our beautiful fountains, but I'd much rather have actual public transit infrastructure in brookside than fountains. Talk about a "toy". Fountains are decoration. Building the kind of transit people will use and that helps attract residents and business is way more important.

Many, many people in waldo and brookside feel the same. We support the streetcar project, always have and always will.

A Facebook page and 14 retired people with too much free time does not a neighborhood make...

    ReplyDelete
  42. What happened to the State auditing the water dept?

    ReplyDelete
  43. McIntyre needs to be fired. She is not qualified to lead.

  45. Keep sly as mayor and KC will be a run down ghetto in no time. Way to go KC.

    ReplyDelete
  46. 9:21 as usual whoever you and your "friends" are your full of bullshit as always. Like all streetcar supporters are of course. Move downtown you'll be more comfortable there than in a real neighborhood that already has bus service by the way. There you can enjoy your train with the tourists and pretend we're just like Portland!! Bye. Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

    ReplyDelete
  47. You can forget a toy train running through South KC. Even the city saw that and redrew the TDD to avoid a certain and abrupt end to the whole fiasco.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Each of those "14 retired people" is more likely still well employed at near end careers and no doubt each one pays more in income tax than 9:21 will ever earn as salary.
There was an overflow, standing room only crowds of homeowners at late winter neighborhood association meetings that the City hoped would not learn any details about the streetcar plan. Once homeowners started to learn details, the support pretty much disappeared.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Oh, come on Mensa boy. Your previous gig pretending to be an African American was incredibly stupid. Now you're pretending to be a "brookside" and "waldo" area resident who doesn't care about fountains. You are proof that having been born with a high IQ does not equate to being able to use that IQ. You're like a race car with no transmission. Useless.

    ReplyDelete
  50. If KC had a balanced budget and a surplus everything would be fine and no one would be talking about a toy train and the tax scheme known as the proposed TDD. Which is nothing but a giant hoover sucking citizens disposable income, savings, etc into the tax abatement pit known as downtown.

  51. City of Fountains...

    ReplyDelete
  52. Oh, my. The city can subsidize the P&L to the tune of $15 mil a year and subsidize hipsters with tax abatements for their apartments and condos, but it can't find $800 to keep a fountain going (in the "City of Fountains," yet)? It's not a good idea to piss people in Brookside and Waldo off. We're among the few still paying taxes in this burg, and we vote.

    ReplyDelete
  53. 9:21 - you are the MINORITY of those in this City who think that pouring money down the rat hole for a streetcar is a good idea. The City should maintain this Armour Hills Fountain, and keep posting signs about the failure of City Hall all over Wornall. I saw the sign and thought it to be a most effective way to communicate the FAILURE of SLY JAMES. In so many ways

    ReplyDelete
  54. 9:21 is a socially inept northlander pretending to have friends in "brookside" and "waldo."

  68. The problem is that what the planners want and what the community wants are two different things. What people regard as affordable, planners consider to be blight. Such planners are more interested in attracting the so-called “creative class” who will want a Bohemian, café lifestyle. This will drive up rents and property values which will then increase tax revenues in order to justify the tax-increment financing needed to provide the tens upon tens upon tens of millions in subsidies to new development downtown. The rest of us get our fountains turned off and all the rest of the neglected services we are seeing in action.

  70. Mayor doesn't care. Mayor only cares about funding Troy Schultes 20 assistant city managers at $200,000 per, wasting tax dollars for inter city youth programs, street cars, and a new airport. He doesn't have time for basic infrastructure.

    ReplyDelete
  75. 12:49 doesn't understand PIAC funds, how they are collected, how that are allocated, or what they are for.

Disagree with the particulars of the streetcar plan all you want. You are misinformed, and likely get too much of your information from blogs and facebook "groups", but there is nothing untoward about using money dedicated to "Public Improvements" to improve public transit. And there is no debate that a streetcar would do just that.

For the record, I live on 70th Terrace in Armour Hills. And I' not even a member of the neighborhood association. They more of this kind of short-sighted and undemocratic shit they pull, the happier I am to have nothing to do with them.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Lol, someone suggested lower taxes caused this??! Lower than what? We have relatively high taxes in KC and this mayor/council has attempted to raise them, what, like seven times in three years?

This is where the opposition to the streetcar comes from; not because it is the worst idea ever (although it is arguably bad; better transit solutions are available) but that so many basic services are unfunded, and we're not just diverting funds, but actually being asked to raise taxes for boutique amenities.

It would be nice to have some of these things, but we should maintain our identity as the City Of Fountains and focus on strategies for making our neighborhoods safer and assisting the school district. If we can move families back into the urban core, not just young renters, but homeowners, then we will actually see the density that we need to support an upgraded public transit system.

Knock off this rebranding effort. Market and reinvest in our current assets. Focus on areas that have been neglected, like almost everything east of Troost. We've spent billions downtown and on the plaza; two areas more or less capable of making improvements without much taxpayer help.

    ReplyDelete
  77. FACT CHECK:

    1. Opposition to the streetcar comes from the same poepl who have opposed EVERY improvement or investment in public transit forever. Many of them are simply reactionaries who simply latch on to any ginned up controversy that feeds their addiction to faux outrage and their insatiable victimhood complex. A few a more reasoned objectors, but many of them are willfully ignorant of the facts about streetcars and public transit and demograpics.

    2. It would be nice to have a lot of things. Fountains are one of them. Public Transit infrastructure is not. It is a necessity for an urban area, and one that has been increasing in importance for some time. Almost every city in America except KC and a few other stragglers recognizes this. KC IS NOT cleverer, smarter or more wise than EVERY OTHER MAJOR OR MIDSIZED METRO in America. Quite the opposite. It is getting increasingly more like the pack of small and unattractive places that most of the anti-transit crowd would like to operate like: Topeka, Peoria, Tulsa, Wichita, etc. and less like successful peer cities like Minneapolis, Nashville, San Antonio

    3. The urban core and east of Troost are the most neglected areas of the city. They have been actively disinvested in for years. The streetcar project is the single biggest investment in those neighborhoods in the history of the city. And the results are real, measurable, and proven. It's not "rebranding", its recognizing the strength of the entire metro rest almost entirely on the performance of the urban core, and whether or not you personally like it, connecting those areas by fixed rail transit is a baseline necessity for their continued and success or their future potential.

I live in midtown. I'm 45. I am originally from urban KCK, have lived in KCMO for 25 years. And I vote.

    ReplyDelete
  78. This wasn't a basic service. This wad a JC Nichols lawn ornament the neighborhood decided not to pay for, so they figured that they could punt.

    ReplyDelete
  79. 2:33: Thanks for posing as a midtowner this time, MB.

"And there is no debate that a streetcar would do just that." Please, 2:17. If there were no debate we wouldn't be debating. Face it. Buses are superior to streetcars. That's why our grandparents' generation decided to replace the streetcars with buses. Even Mensa boy says the streetcar is about development, not transit.

    ReplyDelete
  80. FACT CHECK LOL 2:33

    ReplyDelete
  81. Here are the facts. 388 people committed this city to one of the biggest boondoggles to ever come down the pike. This whole deal has been flawed and dishonest since day one, when Russ Johnson decided to get around the voters with the special election with his boy toys David and Staubio doing the dirty work for him.

    ReplyDelete
  82. 2:33 drank the koolaid....

    ReplyDelete
  83. Here are the other facts:

The streetcar will kill children playing.

Blacks will ride it and that's baaad.

Patrick Touhey and Dan Coffey are against it, so everyone else must be, because they have values that are really in touch with most people's.

Mailing ballots to directly to voters, which is easier than going to a polling place, is cheating.

You cannot jog if there are streetcars.

    Streetcars are closing fire stations.

Streetcars cause homicides to be high.

Businesses should be given a vote on things, because that's how democracy is supposed to work.

Low voter turnout makes elections invalid.

Everyone in "Brookside" thinks exactly the same and posts on TKC, or has signed of on letting "SMARTKC" speak for them.

If you don't agree with me, you are a "hipster" or you "drink coffee" or "have a beard", so you do not count.

Renters should now be allowed to vote, because that's unAmerican.

The Trolley Track trail was designed for strolling and jogging. That's why it exists.

The 16.1 million annual trips on ATA buses prove no one uses them.

Even though car ownership and driving is flatlined, and transit usage is up, and has been for DECADES, public transit is a fad.

As long as we stop the streetcar, we can improve buses in KC and transit stuff or whatever I'm supposed to say. SMART.

I know a lot about public transportation, city planning, data and other such shit.

Streetcars cost too much. Thousands of miles of roads are basically free to build and maintain.

All the developers who say they are building on the streetcar line because of the streetcar line are lying.

If you don't agree, you are being paid by consultants.

If you are smarter than me, you are "Mensa Boy".

Young people are not a demographic we want in the city. They are strange, and I'm the one who pays all the taxes or people exactly like me.

People are really mad at the mayor, especially in Brookside. If you are not, you don't live in Brookside or you aren't a person.

This blog is pretty representative of the real world.

The anti-streetcar "movement" is totally just grassroots people. Lots of them.

No one in KC wants transit or has ever voted for it.

If the opposition was "real", it wouldn't be confined to a hatespace blog and a facebook group smaller than a highschool band's fan page.

Have fun on facebook though, with your hilarious cartoons from a community paper cartoonist and your awesome take-down posts ghost written by an out-of-state shill and a "self-employed" tea partier. You really got your fingers on the pulse of the city.

  95. psst! Hey dumbass, we quit using the "disenfranchisement" talking point weeks ago, when people who actually understand the law reminded us that we don't...

Right now we are all supposed to just be saying that the "toy train boondoggle is closing fire stations/keeping police from policing/or preventing us from spending it all on empty highway projects for the Northland".

Also, we're still saying its racist to build proven development and transit infrastructure in black neighborhoods that have been disinvested in for 60+ years, because some of the project would also serve midtown, which is lily white (wink, wink), and no one will ever use transit on the east side or in the urban core.

If that fails, just pretend its all for youngsters, but call them "hipsters", and talk about irrelevant things that old white people don't like, like beards or coffee.

Stick to the fucking talking points and read your emails. Jesus. Your making us look like amateurs. If you can't keep it together Show Me and the corporate puppet masters will quit telling us what to do. Or worse, our actual neighbors, not just the nimby Nancys who we juiced up with lies, false dichotomies and scare tactics, will start telling people what they actually think. We can't have that.

When those 2 misdirections and lies are exposed we'll use something new, though we're kind of running out of baseless bullshit arguments after all the other ones we ever used got proven false.
