Tragic report notes the consequence of fewer people making a living off the land: "Abandoned schools are seemingly common in Kansas – places where residents once had dreams of economic prosperity. Yet population is waning in rural America and has been since the Great Depression. Some areas resisted decline a little longer, seeing a baby boom after World War II, followed by a slow, downward spiral."

This not a problem only in Kansas. The population in Missouri north of I-70 is actually less than it was 100 years ago.
ReplyDeleteThere was a time when the majority of our population lived and were employed on farms. Today, the industry does not require so much labor.
